I used power armor, mega easy. I ran out of core, but I just walked the rest of the way there slowly then fast traveled back.
Is it just me or do caps seem to mean nothing? I'm ~32 hours in, level 21, and I only have about 3000 caps. I rarely seem to visit traders as their prices are so poor. I am using a ammo crafting mod, so maybe I'm not using traders as much with me not needing to buy ammo. The ammo mod is good and balanced too - I need a quite a lot of material just to make 10 10mm rounds etc.
Also, I've been wandering around in modded t45D armour, only to realise I've had T51 parts in my inventory for ages without realising
. Shame I don't have enough adhesive to mod it.
If I want to grow tatos etc at my own base (Red Rocket), do I need to hire a settler to tend to the crops? Or do they just automatically grow and produce fruit etc. over time, providing there's enough water?
I ask because...

They'll grow on their own but you'll have to remember to keep going back and tend to crops.
If a settler is doing it they should auto put the tatos in your workshop storage for you.

Yeah that's how I thought it worked but I nothing was appearing on the plant nor in the workshop. I haven't been back to check in a while though.
So if I plant them anywhere randomly, obviously they won't appear in a workbench, but should just start growing? Do they all need a water source nearby?

I also need to step my game up in this area - I believe I have the required things to plant already and I've build a water purifier for the water... But I've neglected planting my 1 piece of Corn so I guess my first step is going to be planting that and then harvesting + spreading it until I have several individual plants...

One person can only tend 6 crops in total (IIRC) so there's not much point in having more than 2 of each crop / person you're going to get to tend them.
I've just planted 2 corn and 4 tatos. Just need some mutfruit. I forgot I needed it for adhesive and sold/ate it, so I'm going to cheat and use a console command to spawn a couple to plant.
Has anyone built much at Red Rocket? Post some screenies

Check out the other settlements you have unlocked, nearly all of them have some form of food growing. Can get a shed load of corn,tato and mutifruit and then setup your own farm. 
I have assigned people to each of my crops but I often just harvest a load when passing. Have about 30 of each item growing.

I still haven't had a single radstorm, but something interesting happened the other day. I was just randomly walking around and something went tearing across the sky super quick. I didn't even get a chance to look up and see what it was, it was over so quick... Wasn't a vertabird as it was jet powered by the sound of it. Looking forward to finding out what it was.

just because it could be ALIENS doesn't mean it is aliens... but lets be fair... It's likely to be aliens.
They've probably crashed somewhere so that you can go find a blaster... I seem to remember that happening in at least one other fallout game...

Wow you guys all have fancy outfits.
I just got some moddifed Leather Armour, such as Deep Pocket Studded Leather Left and Right Leg, Stabilized Studded Leather Left and Right Arms, Road leathers, Armour Helmet, Patrolman Sunglasses, and Lucky Metal Chest Piece (Picked it up from a Supermutant, gives a +2 Luck) but I might go back to my Deep Pocketed Studded Leather Chest Piece instead. The Metal Chest Piece looks a bit odd. Would mean I drop 3 damage resistant if I do but gain 13 energy resistant. Would love to find something better then modified leather but guessing wont be until later in the game when metting other then Raiders and Supermutants. Well, I bumped into some Gunners but their armour wasn't that much better.
If you get the
Ballistic Weave mod, you can add it to certain clothes sets and also to certain hats - then it does'nt matter what your outer armor is because you can get 220 dam resistance and energy resistance from just two items
Hehe. I wasn't sure if I should have read the spoiler, but it was what I suspected. There is what appears to be a crater on the SW part of the map and that is the direction the noise was heading.... I'll head there at some point.
Right now, my modded 10mm is one shot killing raiders. I'm only playing on normal difficulty, simply because I'm finding it hard to aim with my FPS fluctuating so much at times.
