you stop the marker in the green then hold direction you want the ball to go and can tap shoot to add a stutter.
just practice and you get used to how long you need to hold a direction to get it in the corner.

It's terrible against laggers though missed penaltys galore

Maybe you only play the game at uk peak times and get people close to you ?
I am not saying that every single game is laggy I am saying that a lot of games say against non EU members can have slight lag and believe me it's an issue because the time you hold the direction to shoot changes in laggy conditions

very few games to me are what I'd consider smooth on ps3 I'd say only time I do get my version of smooth is with people that also have a 1mb + upload.

How are people finding the 'be a goalkeeper' bit in the arena ?

I must say im really enjoying that aspect more than the game. I have only played about 4 games but most of my time is in the arena as a keeper. So cant wait to play it for real on Oct 1st :D

I actually liked the PES Demo. I will have to play fifa again to compare but fifa still feels a little restrictive. There is a sense of autopilot about fifa that puts me off sometimes. Never feels like I am actually playing. Almost like a linear football game where all my shots seem destined for a particular path rather than any real control.

+1 That's always been my issue with Fifa.

If only we could have PES2, PES3 or PES4 with up to date graphics :p

However, there is only one football game I will be buying this year and it's Fifa.
 
Played this properly last night.

First game: 4-0
Second game: 5-0
Third game - 5 - 2 (I let them score two in the 1st half to see if i could come back in the 2nd half)
Forth game: 7-0

I do like the player movement from the cpu on your team but it makes it very easy. Is it set on very easy mode or something?

I do like it but these are the things I dont like:

Passing the ball always goes to your player. I was pressing random directions and it always made it to my player

Auto tackling. I didnt even have to press a tackle button and it tackled players.

Scoring goals. Hopefully this is set to some really easy setting as scoring 4 plus goals each game without even doing tricks is stupid.

Hopefully these functions can be turned off but it all seems a little too easy. I stand by my comments earlier about feeling like I am only helping out with the game rather than in total control.

Good points:

Player movement was great. Actually very helpful runs. (Bit too helpful at times)

Player animation and ball control.
