So we've had the A Level results. It's now our turn to receive results.
Good luck to everyone and hope that you get the grades you want and deserve.

I'd rather we don't have people coming in here posting things like "GCSE's don't matter" or "everybody gets A*s nowadays" because it's not helpful and simply not true.

Again: best of luck to everybody receiving results :)

Will it be another record breaking year? :p

Good luck people hope you do better than i did :D

I would also like to add its not the end of the world if you mess them up a little. My grades ranged from F to B and im studying a computing degree at university :D

Infact i got an F in IT at school and now im doing it at degree level (they lost my coursework 60% total)

GCSEs

ROFL

Anyway, bets of luck guys. Providing you get 5 C's and passes in English and Maths you're just as well set as someone who gets 11A*'s. All they are is a stepping stone for A-Levels, which are a stepping stone for uni.

Think I got 10 GCSEs. Honestly don't know how someone can fail them :\

THIS.

I managed to get all the c+ in all the important subjects (well i got E in maths but did a re take when i was odler for a C)

As long as it gets you on the right college course its kinda irrelevant. No one really cares you got an A in geography at GCSE when you are applying for university.

Do any of you think they were going over the top with importance of GCSE at school? I remember being under immense pressure and worry, teachers always telling us if we don't do well we will be be dole scum for the rest of our lives. Looking at the bigger picture now though they really don't matter too much.

GCSEs do help for university applications. LSE are most notorious for looking at them. In addition, I know Cambridge create an index score from your GCSEs as part of assessing you.

I can't see other universities completely ignoring it. Its the last indication of how you handle doing many subjects (some of which you don't like) all simultaneously.

However, good A-level results can easily compensate for bad GCSEs in most cases. In fact if it highlights a change in your character who finally starts taking his academics seriously at the beginning of college/6th form, then it shows maturity. I know someone who had fairly poor GCSEs, who then got 5As at A-level in hard subjects and walked into Oxford to do Physics.

That's not true. It might be true in some people's case, but it's not true for everyone. It depends what you want to do in life. If you want to sit there being "dole scum" then they don't matter.

However, what if you want to study medicine. A lot of medical schools ask for an A in English language. Most of them ask for a B minimum in English, Maths and Science.

What if you harbour ambitions to go to a Russell Group University? Chances are that they will look at your GCSE's.

indeed. tis why I didn't take it :o
I took it in Year 8 as 'self-study', I thought why not as I didn't have any GCSEs at the time. It was too easy and really quite boring, I didn't do much revision and I believe a good chunk was basic coursework. It's got even worse now, in Year 11 some people were moved off the DiDA course because they found it too hard to some OCR junk. This was all coursework and included tasks such as moving files and sending emails.

Obviously don't take my ramblings as fact.I go to an ex poly University. People who did get A's in GCSE will no doubt do better than me in life by going to a much better university

The point i was making was not to worry if you only get C's its not the end of the world ;D

No point going in tomorrow for me. If I do poorly it will just annoy me for the rest of the holidays. Can happily wait till I am back at school in 2 weeks time for another year... :)

B's are about all that matter at GCSE in the important subjects. And I went to a proper university. :p

When you get older you shall realise this. However, for now, good luck, examination result day is blooming stressful and I feel your pain!

Well, some contemplation before you start the next year can be helpful. I wouldn't leave it right up to the beginning of term.

Oh yes obviousy ;)
Bad grades aren't the end of the world. A levels are more important than GCSE's :)

All depends on your background really. But as long as you do ok, it's not such an issue.

Best of luck to everyone here and don't forget that they are definitely not the end of the world.
