Official Gigabyte DS3 Owners Thread

SATA drives work the same way as IDE with Intel chipsets. I didn't need a disk or anything for my Raptor to install XP. You only need it for RAID.

AFAIK most Intel chipset boards do now only come with a single IDE channel, unless the motherboard manufacturer adds another somehow.

wish it told you what voltage it used rather than that stupid +0.1 stuff
The stock voltage for DDR2 is 1.8v so you just add onto that.

+0.1 1.9v
+0.2 2.0v
+0.3 2.1v
+0.4 2.2v
+0.5 2.3v
+0.6 2.4v
+0.7 2.5v (max)

Thats good to hear, thanks for that mate, i may be going Conroe after all. :D

No worries - just keep us updated with how it goes :)

Will do, im not into overclocking so ill just need some decent ram to go with it, ive got some of that Geil Value at the minute so ill probs get some Geil again, anyone recommend any that will be decent just for stock. :)

get the 6300 instead you will get a better clock with the 6300 and save yourself some money too.

Not into overclocking, aint got a clue how to do it either, so stock will do me. :p

Just as long as i see a noticeable improvement over my A64 3500+, that'll do me. :)

Conroe only runs at 266fsb so almost anything will do. If your running stock you
might as well get the 945 chipset S3 or an asrock board, half the point to conroe is that it overclocks so easy.

I brought some 266mhz ram and overclocked it to 333mhz, this is often the case with ddr2. Even the budget ram overclocks that much

The overclockers website states this motherboard has a raid function. Which one is it?

Cheers.
How do you mean?

Gigabyte website said:
RAID Function for Storage Device
Supporting RAID 0, 1,JBOD function, GIGABYTE SATA2 and PATA Controller delivers completely solution for storage interface to increase fault tolerance, improve data access performance and provides additional interface for more IDE devices

Seems a bit to cheap that S3 board, only £68, but your saying if im just gona be running stock then thats all i need as ill still get great performance, would be handy to as id save quite a bit with getting that board. :)

Thanks for that link to the memory guide Duke, much appreciated, 2Gb of that Geil PC5300 will probably do me as well then. :)

Just another question, having never used intel before, would my PSU be ok for it, ive got a GlobalWin SuperSilent 520w that im using a 24x pin adapter on as its only a 20x pin, it works fine on my A64 rig, but would it be ok on the Conroe, or does it have to be full 24x pin if you know what i mean, can't use the adapter.

EDIT: Says this on the Gigabyte site about that S3 board.

Due to standard PC architecture, a certain amount of memory is reserved for system usage and therefore the actual memory size is less than the stated amount.

Does that mean if i stuck 2Gb in it id lose some, so i would'nt actually have 2Gb.

The DS3 says that as well  I think it's due to the rounding of memory or something? Neither have onboard video which would normally use 32-128MB of system memory, if you didn't have a dedicated card.

Yeah im just gona bang my x1800 XT in there for now, should be able to breathe a bit more on the Conroe as my 3500+ will be a bottleneck i spose, not that ive noticed as it cuts through everything maxed out in 1280x1024 anyway, might help in upcoming titles though if it can breathe a bit more, as im probably not getting the full potential out of it yet. :)

It should give a tidy boost :) Even things like Windows will be a touch quicker, mainly due to dual core etc.

Btw I've updated the opening post with some new info/links and started a FAQ section, now we have a lot more info about the board. If anyone wishes to add, just post here :p

Nice, thanks for the help, im thinking of going for the S3 board as suggested by silversurfer (thanks) seen as im not clocking, 2Gb of the GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) (MY-034-GL), and the E6600. :)

Why on earth are you not clocking?

Get the DS3 and a 6300 and clock it to 3ghz with ease.

It will take all of 5 minutes.

To be frank unless you are going to clock there is not much point in an upgrade from the rig you have.

I actually might try my hand at clocking if its that easy. :)

Was just thinking again last night that i may save myself £100 on the CPU and just get the 6300 instead, then i can put £40 of that save towards the mobo and get the DS3, then i can try my hand at overclocking it if its that easy. :)

If it will get to 3ghz with ease, and its easy to do then i may as well give it a whirl.
