Official Gigabyte DS3 Owners Thread

The newer p35 gigabytes clock higher with no need to upgrade the chipset cooling, and support the newer intel chips called penryn with their upgraded cpu vcore circuitry, and crucial ram works excellent with these. I have pc6400 @ 1125Mhz on a P35-DQ6, albeit with the fsb not at 1:1 due to cpu fsb limitation I believe.

Hi I've got a few questions about this board.

I'm using an old case and I've got no spare spacers and screws so will I get spacers and screws with the Mobo? How many spacers does it need? What are the holes with the circles around them?

The CPU I'm using with this will be the e2140. I've seen on the Gigabyte website that these CPU's are only supported from Bios revision F11, so thats got me thinking I'm going to have to update the BIOS straight after putting everything together and most probably with a floppy disk. What will happen if I don't flash the BIOS? Will it not recognize the CPU at all? Is the BIOS easy to flash with a floppy disc?

Thanks.

Spacers and screws are supplied with the case normally. You only get the connectors plate (the plate with the matching surrounds for the USB/speakers/network/keyboard/mouse etc).

If you buying the DS3, why not look at the latest P35 version, not the P965 version ?

case is old but what about power supply

If you using an old case, are you buying a new power supply for it, or just going to use the one in the case? Is the current power supply up to the task of the new board and CPU?

pc shops

To be honest I have never seen anyone actually selling such things. I am sure a local pc shop must have them by the caseload, perhaps you could ask your local one?

edit - I have looked at the 'famous online auction site' and there are a few on there for sale. Honestly for the prices they want though, you could pick up a cheap low-end case for the same price.

I've had a look at my old board thats in my case and there seems to be a fair few in there holding the board so I should be ok (fingers crossed).

Just don't want to find out I'm short when I'm putting it in my case :(

standard atx

assuming your old board is a standard ATX layout, you should be able to remove the screws, remove the board, drop the new board on the risers (spacers) and screw it in. Usually there are 6 in total, 3 at the front of the board, and 3 in the middle, spaced evenly accross the board's width.

Another question. I'll be updating the BIOS using Q-Flash from a floppy. Does the floppy need to be a MS-DOS start up disk? I don't think it does I'm just double checking.

edit - I've downloaded the latest bios, unzipped the package and its given me 3 files (Flash895, autoexec, 965PDSP.F12). Do I put all these onto the floppy disk?

You need to create a MSDOS start up disk and put the flash program and bios file onto it (or another spare disk). Once in DOS, just goto A: and type "A:\flash895 965PDSP.F12.bin".

Or just use the Windows flasher, which is a lot easier :p

You just need the BIOS file (965PDSP.F12) on the floppy if using Q-Flash.

I just had my GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) delivered so what do you think the BIOS version will be? I'm a bit scared about flashing the BIOS with a floppy, I'd much rather do it in the windows environment. But I've bought an E2140 and I'm told there only supported from BIOS F11. What will happen if I put the CPU in, don't update the BIOS and try and install windows? Will it boot at all?

Got a problem trying to overclock a 2160 on the 965G-DS3 version (i.e. with the X3000 onboard graphics).

Can change the multi down from 9 thru 6 no problem.

Cannot, however, change the fsb - bus speed always shows as 200 (rated fsb 800) in CPUZ even though the bios does actually save the settings I put in (e.g 333).

Gone through f8 and f9 bios updates with no effect.

Anything anyone can point to I may be doing wrong or could try?

Cheers

My old ASROCK 754 board doesn't have a 3-pin PWR_LED connector so I'm not sure if the case I'm putting the DS3 mobo in has one. Does the PWR_LED connector need to be used? Whats the difference between the mobo's PWR_LED and System panel connector 'Message LED/Power/Sleep LED'?
