***Official GTAV PC Thread*** [Important warning updated in the OP]

Rockstar has admitted to a bug in the new PC release of Grand Theft Auto V that is preventing some users from logging in to their much delayed purchase. There is a Rockstar support article detailing the problem, one involving the characters used in the users Windows account no less, with a draconian solution to the problem while waiting for the inevitable first patch for the AAA title.

According to the knowledge base article, the problem involves any Windows user account with characters other than the basic upper and lower case alphabet, and the numeric set. So any account with a '~' or a '_' will not work. And this is a problem as some accounts created by using a Microsoft account will have the first five characters of the email address, an underscore, and three zeros like this: usern_000 for [email protected].

The only solution to the issue offered by Rockstar is to use a new Windows account to play the game, which is quite the step for most users. They even include a disclaimer that they are not positive it will be possible to move your saved progress, saying

We will update this support article with any new information as soon as we have it, including expected timing of a fix and whether you will be able to transfer progress on the newly-created Windows username over to your original Windows user account
This is causing quite the stir on their Support forums, as this game has had three official delays, with more rumoured launch windows missed before that, making this additional wait too much for some. On top of that, pre-orders have been going on for more than a year, adding to the frustration for those that bought early. To experienced gamers however, this is just one more in a long string of anticipated game releases marred by an initial broken experience, and a good warning against pre-ordering computer games.

for such a major launch its a minor issue, but I guess I wouldn't feel like that if affected.

Depends on your internet and server load but generally mot people are getting 1-2mbps when its good, when its bad, you are talking small kbps.

Only issue is if the server disconnects whilst downloading you may get an error which manually requires you to press the retry button :(

I am just downloading the 60gb now, It started great and would have finished inside 15 mins, now its dropped off and looking at another 60 mins.:(

The amount of options and customisation is insanely good, for both kb/m and pad controls and the UI.

The only thing I would have liked is the option to switch views when getting in a car. What I mean by this is that I would like to play first-person on foot and third in car. It would have been nice if it switched to that automatically.

I'm really liking performance, except for the distance scaling option which I have right down as it tanks fps in certain areas. Does anyone know what exactly it does?

The Forest areas are pretty much the only thing that forces me below 60fps atm.

Can you link the article Gaz? I'm trying to figure out if my RSC username (a hotmail address) is going to be toast? I'll probably use a gmail address to be safe.

I find the police seem to be bad for fps. Also thought it was running awful to start with, installed afterburner and it was running 25-30fps, switch to full screen and up to 55-60 fps, hadn't realised (noborder)windowed would lock the fps. By default it gave me quite a few options on high even some at very high which I'm happy with considering I'm only on a 270x, pleasantly surprised how well it's running.

So much better driving around now that I worked out how to get the xbox controller to work. They just moved the black/white button by the right joystick to become the shoulder buttons, so I was able to bind enough buttons for it to complete the 'calibration'. :D

Correct, its a bit of a non issue considering all it takes is setting up a local account on your PC with no symbols but obviously its an extra step that shouldn't be required.
