Official Home Gym Building Thread

I asked the woman at the store and she said it would be fine. I've ordered my stuff now. Will make extra effort to protect the flooring with mats and whatever else may be helpful.

I won't be hitting those kinds of weights yet either. Just starting off.

1) You'll outgrow that in a week.
2) That's not going to help you do squats.

I was in the same position. I was cleaning the barbell over my head for squats, and decided that it was dangerous, and I couldn't increase the weight safely. Therefore, I was only ever going to squat as much as I could OHP, and it was never going to be safe. So I looked for a bench with a squat stand, and eventually came to the conclusion that a squat stand is barely any safer than just cleaning the bar. I've now got a power rack, bench and weights arriving tomorrow :P

Seriously, if you want to do anything but bench press, a bench-press bench isn't going to be enough. And if you want to start body building, 30kg isn't going to be enough.

It's a harsh truth, but you need to spend a lot more than £50. My Rack, Lat pully, Bench and 100kg oly weights cost me £695 including delivery - not that much when you consider the cost and inconvenience of going to a gymn for two years.

Hes right. Our lass got me something similar one christmas. Lets just say it didnt last too long lol

Cheers man. I will double check everything then. I can contact the builders and find out what's what. I did mention before, but the flooring is concrete (no floorboards)..just wood/laminate over that which is what I am trying to protect. I'll also look in to extra thick matting.

The gym is not for me currently.

it cannot just be concrete there has to be beams or joists or something along those lines holding the concrete up. extra thick matting is expensive i think i paid roughly £60-£70 per mat excluding shipping and you will need at least 2-4 of them.

builders can be cowboys no matter how long they have been working, i would not trust any builder unless I had several jobs done by them and all of them had stood the test of time (several years) and were completed satisfactorily.

architects on the other hand if they have been with the same firm or running the same company for many many years then usually that means their work is sound, otherwise it is likely that have been sued and bankrupted business's if their current company is less than a few years old.

obviously though an architect's advice is going to cost money, but it is a lot safer advice. therefore it's usually better if you know one personally rather than professionally.

i have seen a gym made in a 2 story wooden barn before, but obviously it was built with being a gym in mind.

Well i had a chat with my mate, and he said it would likely cost the same to build as to buy new. So I'm setting up a savers account to filter money off for my purchase.

This looks pretty reasonable to me.
What are the general opinions on this?

I'll also be checking ebay and gum tree to see if i can pick some bits up cheap while I'm saving.

When I was speccing up a rack, I was thinking about the CF375 until I saw this:

Save up a little more and get the CF475 instead - put mine together last night, and it looks like it'd stop a landrover. Also bear in mind that with powerhouse, you may get a good deal if you arrange a purchase over the phone rather than buying straight from the website, so you won't need to save as much as you may think :)

I need to buy myself some bigger weight plates

Aye its gone, that was from when i started the squats, got crocodile skin now.
100% after some additional plates, just waiting for a good deal

olympic plates tend to hold their value really well and the price of scrap metal is high, therefore deals are near impossible to find on brand new stuff anyway.

look on gumtree and ebay, especially gumtree, do not be put off by old rusty plates, check out what i managed to do to second hand stuff in the early parts of the thread. they can be easily restored and cheaply, but it is time consuming.

As others have said, go for the 475, it's more robust and can handle more weight. Also, they got 0% financing so you can get it for about 30 quid a month

Thinking I'm going to hold off on the leg extension machine for now. I looked at my thighs and calves today and they looked really big. By the time I can squat 400-500 lbs they'll be really massive.

Care to elaborate? Don't understand what you're hinting at.

I'm new to this so help is appreciated, not things like that.

It just seemed a little odd that you took the advice of a sales assistant in a store (with the agenda of making a sale), who also happened to be a woman, about the load bearing capacity & structural integrity of your flat.

Chances are it could well be fine but the reason for my ':/' was just to display that I would be a little bit uneasy about it.

I don't know what story your flat is on or what would be below it, should the floor give way, but the thought of the damage to the building or somebody below...

It's just my opinion of course. If you're ground floor it's not so much an issue.
