****OFFICIAL I7 980x HEX CORE OVERCLOCKING THREAD****

my i7 930 is at 4Ghz @ 1.28 :P
I want this 980X but i can't afford it :( any advantage of running 200 Bclk over high multipler ? i see people hitting 4.5Ghz just by changing the multiplier.. after all you can still up the memory speed with the divider?.

I think that say 20x150mhz bus (3ghz) is the same as 30x100mhz bus (3ghz) for the CPU itself but you might not be able to balance other factors appropriately using the DRAM and QPI multipliers. So one would probably be greater than the other in the end by a considerable amount in some cases. As an example in my ongoing test runs I've had a rough 2% difference in effective CPU speed (4.1 vs 4.16ghz) but a Gflops difference in LinX test of a whopping 7%! just because I couldn't balance the memory & QPI accurately with available settings.

I'm not an OC expert so I could be wrong! :)

I'm at 4.26GHz with 12GB RAM, but having to run it at around 1460MHz even though it's capable of 2000MHz. Anything higher makes system unstable.
The extreme editions dont have better memory controllers or anything else, only a unlocked multi is what makes them different.

12GB puts more strain on the chips memory controller. And the only way to get a 100% accurate reading of voltage is to use a multimeter, you can pick one up for a few quid. But i wouldn't bother unless the BIOS and software readings are very different.

I am running mine @ 4173.5 and the 12 GB memory running @1610 nothing else’s was changed in the BIOS but the BLCK changed to 160, it’s an Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58
It’s been running for a month now without a hitch, temps are (using core temp) are mid-30s to high 40s.
Am a VERY happy bunny with this processor:)

Well the higher the CPU OC the harder it is to run the memory at high speeds. For instance i can get 12GB RAM @ 1800MHz @ 3.9GHz CPU speed. But it's better to just have a higher CPU speed as it's more noticable.
I've found Asus boards are normally better with higher frequency memory though.

what's the 12 GIG of ram for?

you doing intensive stuff with it?

Just how much of the 12 gig do you actually use at any one time?

Hmm i use upto about 8 - 9GB at any one time. I do loads of graphics, video editing, website design, and 3D modelling/rendering.

So i'll often have multiple software open like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, 3DS Max and so on.

OK mine has arrived....

Putting it into fully blocked P6T7 Asus SC.....

Will post results later...
