Official Kings Gauntlet OcUk List Thread

I think we are not doing too badly considering the size of our team. Have you been on the Ireland forum? Those guys are nuts! Reminds me of how it used to be here :)

I think we'll name this "the Gauntlet effect"...

So what do you call and how do you explain this:

Surely if seti has gone up that much F@H must come down at least a little bit or do those of us that have temporarily swapped mean so little to the team, how inconsiderate :p

i hope that the effect isn't just temporary and that maybe some people like the feel of SETI slackers beneath their feet enough to stick around after the gauntlet is finished. :)

Well, I might stick around a bit to put some distance between myself and that pesky lizard :) But I also might switch back to Folding to help out with the team and then let the lizard catch up and stomp me, then stomp him back again and dissapear of into the distance again :D

Decisions decisions...

Well, I have to go back to folding for two weeks, but I might not stay there, or then again I might if a Q6600 or two happen in the not-too-distant future.

I won't nick your Doom smiley though. :D

Just had to retire one PC (fortunately a slow one, though not slowest).

Hurriedly backing it up before the PSU and/or mobo finally gives up, so I had to take load off the CPU to allow the extra load the file copying will place elsewhere. :(

Just like I thought, these youngsters have no staying power, even if they are good in a sprint :p :D

My main rig that has been seti'ng for the Gauntlet appears to have randomly died :(

It had just reached 1,000 RAC and now it doesn't like to boot and when I can coax it into Vista the graphics constantly crash.

Keep getting the message that the graphics thingy has stopped responding and recovered and then it'd do it again a few seconds later.

Wondering whether it could be a graphics card problem, wish I had another PCI ex card to test.

If its an ATI card turn off the "whateveritisthatssupposedtorecoverwhenitbugsout" also if you are overclocking are you sure you locked the PCI-E bus at 100Mhz?

I just ordered a Q6600, Gigabyte G33M mobo and a CNPS8700

This particular combination might sound familar to a certain member who has posted in this thread (yes, I found your thread, it was helpful). It's a bit quiet there though. :)

Won't be built until after the Gauntlet though.

It's been showing issues for about 4-6 weeks, and quite possibly longer due to it being set to auto-reboot. I had to cut it from two clients to one otherwise it would BSOD, reboot, or switch itself off within minutes. Even with one client it still did it but I could leave it for days. I had to do the same with SETI. Now I've had to remove the lot and sometimes it refuses to switch on at all. It makes a horrible whistling noise for a few seconds on power-up (like an old kettle boiling), so I can only assume a dodgy capacitor somewhere, but it's all custom-made so sourcing replacements is next to impossible.

Originally I thought it was graphics-related due to some of the errors but it won't even get to POST with the on-board graphics.

This system has always had heat issues - took a serious amount of lapping, replacing both HSF fans, adding more fans, adding bits of cardboard to promote airflow, and still ran in the mid-50s with a case temp in the mid-40s. Any hardware will die eventually with that much heat.

Essay over. :D

Thats not good, my X2 has been at sort of temperature for around 2 years.

Currently 51 (system) and 53 (CPU).:p

Even the HDD was in the low-40s. That's the trouble with a system as small as this one was...

To give you an idea, that case is probably 75% full of hardware. That doesn't give much room for airflow. The new case isn't huge, but it's cavernous by comparison. :D

PS - if you need scale, that's a memory stick (oldskool - not even a Pro version) poking out the front.

It may be a rubbish case for airflow but the front looks quite nice.

SSF are all very well but they do have that problem, I built a coolish system (C2D 6320 with O/B GFX) in an Antec NSK1300 for my sister a couple of months ago and had quite a problem trying to keep it cool, that was without being OC'd. That looks even smaller. :(

It's tiny, and yes, it does look shiny. :D

Cooling a C2D in there would be easy by comparison. Off load the CPU temp sits in the low 30s. If a Mac Mini can do it then I'm sure that could. Unfortunately with a custom-build motherboard a swap isn't an option (and in all likelihood it's the motherboard that's sick anyway).

Mines got the swiftech H20 120 on it now :)

Currently been running at 3.4Ghz with temps in the mid 40's (its cold in the garage)

It has been a busy little thing though for the past two weeks:
