Does that mean one would be able to watch Motors TV on it? I see it's now in the Freeview channel lineup but I've nothing that'll allow me to watch it :(

No. HEVC codec is nothing to do with what you can watch. It's not an addon. It's a built in support feature.

Most bluray rips are H264 codec. If you download films via torrent (which i'm sure most of us do but we don't admit it), the absolute best quality rips are usually around the 40+ GB in size. That is using H264. This new HEVC (High Efficient Video Coding) uses H265 codec. It means you get the same quality as the 40 GB file size film, but only half the size at ~20GB

I have 500+ Bluray rips on my hdd's, mostly in H264. It's taking up around 4TB of space. If they were all in H265, it would be taking up 2TB instead, AND they will be same quality. The only problem is, i will have to download/rip them all again using the new codec to take advantage of the space savings.

Kodi Helix is the first xbmc release to support HEVC/H265. If you download a lot of movies and want the best quality with DTS-HD-MA / Dolby True-HD audio, then look for a HEVC/H265 version if you can find one.

I haven't found any x265/h265 content "out in the wild" yet...

I came across the original Robocop, and didn't take much notice until it wouldn't play on xbmc. Everything plays on xbmc, so it took a bit of head scratching and it wasn't until i realised it had HEVC in the title. After googling HEVC and finding out what it was, then finding out xbmc gotham didn't support it, i've been eagerly waiting for xbmc to support it. The day has come.

There is very little out there, just a few groups dipping their toes in with an encode here and there. I can't see it taking hold for a few years yet as the hardware requirements are more than average joe has whereas h.264 runs on pretty much anything. Still, will be nice to know we can play them when they do start cropping up.

Yeah, it's just a matter of the manufactures adding support for it now. I think it will be sooner than a couple of years though. HEVC was made mainly for 4k to be able to stream it easier. The Sony Xperia Z2 phone supports it, so the hardware can be compact, it's just a matter of when they will all start doing it.

How do you get it to look like this?

I have the aeon skin installed ATM.

Plenty of videos on youtube. In movies you press up and enable the different views. Once chosen you have lots of options to fine tune how you want it by pessig up also.

Acer Revo RL70 Frodo -> Gotham Solved

Problem 1 - Vertical Stretching
Simply changed my TV from Auto to fixed 16:9

Problem 2 - No 5.1 Passthrough Through Optical
Stupid decision by devs, but you must enable Confluence skin, go to settings and enable Expert mode, go to Audio, check Passthrough. Voila!

Gotham seems so much lighter and smoother. As an Aeon MQ5 die hard, you must check out "Eminence" skin. Its lovely looking and very, very wife friendly.

Happy days!

Trying to think what buttons I can have on front screen. Have movies, tv, ign, youtube, weather, prograns, settings, power.

What are some good apps/add ons?

Got Gotham up and running fine now on my system, none of the issues I was having before. Is it just me or does Aon Nox not as tweakable as it is under frodo. Cant even do things like the half hight shift view unless im missing something.

If your planning on streaming live tv on it then ontapp.tv addon has been great for me so far. Also could consider games maybe with something like advanced launcher.

It's a different version.

I think the original makers either stopped development or changed it drastically.

Not 100% sure on the story here, but it's not the same as the old one.

Arr right. Oh well I noticed the picture was also darker then frodo. Stuck the USB stick with that back in for now. At least now I have Gotham installed and working to play with in the future. For now I'll stick with frodo.

Gotham has a system to reduce the amount of options based on a selectable user knowledge level. So you can dumb it down for less experienced users. Switch to confluence and alter it in the settings menu.
