***Official MacBook Air Thread***

It's cheaper than the competition and $200 less than the cheapest MPB.

Steve said in the keynote they were aiming at the Sony TZ series. With similar HDD and RAM the Sony is $2799.

Yup - It showed how far we have come to miniaturise circuit board, chips etc but also how far behind we are with battery technology.

I think Intel making the CPU smaller just for Apple is interesting. I'd love to know what that contract is worth. I've got a tenner that says they're not allowed to sell the chips to anyone else for a few years too.

But who's to say Intel not going to make another CPU at a higher speed and then market that? Stuck at 1.8Ghz for a few years? :p

According to Anandtech it's the Merom die on the Penryn packaging running at a voltage between the vanilla Merom and the low voltage version. The extra voltage helps keep the speed up for the non-overclocking peeps out there.

I'm going to call it the Core2Duo SLV (slightly lower voltage).

Apparently not so far behind. It's a marketting thing. Apparently normal AA batteries could have tens of times the capacity.

If I was looking to get a laptop I'd get a MacBook Pro over the MacBook Air.

I can see why people would want one, but damn, for the same money you could get a better machine that's hardly massive.

Not knocking anyone who's bought one.. just saying, I couldn't.

Also... some unboxing pictures for those that care :)

Same here (after some thought!) - I really like the look of the air - although I know i'd sit on it or something but the MBP would be a better choice for me, if I didnt already have a macbook...

From 4 days ago(!) I was referring to the fact that wireless has been exploited a LOT recently (the last 12 months) but apple are taking it to the next level with this device sharing... As I said, this time last year I could search for wireless networks and find maybe 2 or three... now that number has increased 3 fold.. Hopefully the market will follow and this will become the mainstream..

I think Dr Jones mentioned keepin .iso files on a memory stick as one example.. which makes sense to me.. Any applications requiring a cd/dvd would be installed at home, where you would have access to an optical drive..

Maybe 'phenomenal' wasnt quite the right word to use... but you've got to admit, its pretty kewl....

Anyway, as I said, each to their own....

Apologies if I spouted rubbish! :)

When will the Apple stores in the UK have these on Display?

I went last weekend to have a looksie before ordering using my EPP and the Trafford Apple store had none on display and no adverts in store... It was crammed full so i didnt bother asking staff, i thought the OcUK lads will know... So anyone?

When they go on sale, maybe a few days before if you're lucky.

I actually couldnt believe when I saw on the internet that Apple justified the loss of the optical drive on watching DVDs because the iTunes rental service will allow you to stream them. WHAT? It wont be available in this country for ages yet and it costs! Blimey!
