I had a ATI 4870 512mb once, lasted for about 3days until I sent the turd back, went Nvidia and never looked back.

One will be better than the other at any given time.

However - this is what creates competition, which, eventually, creates better products for us.

Arguing over which is best is nothing short of pathetic, especially this "loyalty" that some people seem to have towards a specific manufacturer.

Hell, the only people who may have any reason for some "loyalty" is anyone who works for either company - but even then, you have to be realistic and realise that the other company do some things better than the company who employ you!
