I can see this getting massive if they manage to make a way of starting new players together with nothing. Say min 6 people at once who start a game in a brand new area of a map that has already been running for months.

If the map is big enough the new team can start their new settlement, farm etc and live in new houses, then discover new large settlements of people.

Maybe even encorporate battle settings. It would be like an FPS version of Settlers :)

The no build area at first sounds good but I think it's a bit of a divisive issue in regards to there being a particularly planned spawn area. We've had this in the past and it's lead to arguments and spawn not being used much.

Some idea I've just thought of would be a rotating spawn build thing - build stuff at spawn and once per month or something the admins clear it out by moving it elsewhere. Might be a bad idea for a whole number of reasons - I haven't thought it through or discussed it with the other admins.

Ah well something along those lines sound good, keeping spawn looking fresh i like the idea of as it's an area i find myself a lot and i must admit the look of 1.7 spawn is a bit "eurgh" now :p

Maybe just make the no build area quite big but make it interesting and open for the occasional change?
 
Yeah remember the map with the fixed spawn (prison) walls.... lol

IMO spawn should be fixed because people build outwards from it, if you check the carto for 1.7 you can see quite a nice spread of builds, kinda like a city on a map.

So long as people stick to the rules (i.e. no dwarfing houses with some massive netherack tower, it would look good.

I think the only thing really wrong with spawn on the new/temp/1.8 map is that it's right by the sea on a pretty small landmass. It needs to be fully inland so people aren't building on the sea..

Interesting... we could all live in small 'villages' for our own homes, linked by rail and balloon or portals or something and have the main spawn for the large communal builds like the castle/hall idea a few pages back.

I agree with an addition to the spawn area being at least double or treble the size of what it currently is.
 
Didn't even have beds! Just had to sleep on rocks!

Oh we used to *DREAM* of living on rocks. We used to live on lava, with a roof made of sand supported by one block of gravel with a pre-nerfed enderman with a gravel fetish lurking by. Rocks? Huh!
 
Assuming that spawn isn't next to the sea, the only size limit to how big it can be is the size of the map :).

True it couldn't be much bigger based on where it is on 1.8 but something double the size of 1.8 spawn far in land should be ok

I forget where it all led to but something like <winningName><1RandomCharDecidedByAdmin> would surely be ok?

I played on a server many many moons ago before an OCUK one exsisted and they had a preset area for spawn set by admins for community and essential builds (noob house, trade house, storage etc). Then some roads branching around in which players were only allowed to build on a 15x15 block and no bigger, further out from spawn you could do what you want but it would be nice to keep spawn more universal :p

Then we could set some rules like builds can only be 30 blocks high unless players are happy with you making a massive sky scraper :p

Not sure. I don't really have a problem with this as an idea.

Yeh, i was thinking on the lines of Settlers style expansion.
