Hello All,

I just ordered my opty 170 from OcUK and it should arrive on tuesday (31st Jan). :D

I want to know who has an opteron 170 and what clocking results you are getting from it. Would be most benficial if you put you steppings on here too and let us know if you get it from OcUK. :)

I also want to know what mobo and RAM you are using and the usual HT and multiplies / dividers you are using along with cooling method too.

So go on, reveal the opteron 170 secrets ;)

ok, i really didnt think OcUK would ever get these in... and they're a pretty damn good price too, but i'm in a dilema now, isn't there limited stock on the dual core opterons and isn't the price due to rise quite considerably soon aswell?

it's just that i'm torn between getting an opteron 170 right now and a good system to go with it, or... wait untill after socket M2 is released and the next nvidia cards to come out so that there's a big enough price drop for me to aford water cooling ontop of my dream system :(

what should i do?

A: Wait as planned for the price drop
B: buy my almost dream system now and save up for water cooling (might take a while)
C: buy the opteron 170 now and wait till after prices drop before getting the rest of the system

My advice would be to stick around for the M2 socket.

The opterons are damned good and the only reason I decided to go for one is because this is the last upgrade for some time for me and I want a little bit of future proofing.

If I was in your situation I would wait and buy your "dream" system and then put watercooling into it.

If you need inspiration to do this, I got my first rig back in March, which cost almost £1800 and sinse then no component (bar the case and PSU) are the same! I've spent over £4K with OcUK and if only I waited for a decent setup in the first place!

None the less, I'd advise wait for M2 and then pounce ;)

Hi Guys,

My opty 170 has arrived from OcUK and I thought it was best to update you as to the stepping.

Any one know if this is a good clocker?

I'm trying to look it up on Google and can't find that much info on it...

I'll be playing with it this evening. :D

Current Status: These goods have been loaded onto a van for delivery today. :D

Has it arrived yes kindnothing? If so, what stepping is it?

Well I for one will keep an eye out if you post any results, because My 170 should be coming from OCUK very shortly also (along with a few other bits and pieces hehehehe)
I've put it in my comp and its working fine, but I had to go back to work so I will post some results when I get back home and have a change to play around with it tonight.

Anyone else had their Opty 170 arrive? If yes, what stepping is it?

Just arrived, same stepping as yours. I will be priming tonight. Lowest possible voltage and highest possible cpu speed. Then crank up the voltage :D

sweet, it'll be a little challenge between us.

What are your comp specs? e.g. mobo, RAM etc etc.

Just fired up my new Opti 170. Straight in @ 2.61 1.36V. Temps are a little higher than my Sandy @2.6 1.52V. Idling it is at 40C.
Full load both cores 45C. It may take a while for the Artic Silver to settle I guess.

Very impressed with the chip I am sure 2.8 is more than achievable with some tweaking.

Matt

Nice job Matt,

Just wondering what the stepping is?

Let us know the results...

Agent, same stepping as yours. Trying to keep it cool with my Zalman CNPS9500 LED.
What temps are you hitting?

Matt

Unfortunatly i'm at work atm. I'm using a Thermaltake Silent Tower to keep her cool. But I've left it at home priming on 1.35V and when I get back it should have done a good amount of work.

I'll let ya know temps. But i've got the same Mobo but different RAM.

I'm pleased to hear you've got a good clock out of your so far ;)

Hope your not going to be had up for missuse of company property!

How do you prime both cores at the same time. It seems that core 1 idles when I run 2 sp2004 sessions?

Matt

Wouldn't worry about that mate, I work damned hard and the company give me a little bit of lee-way for using the internet...

As for running 2 instances of Prime. You need it save in two different locations on your comp.

I've just mine saved in the same location in two different files. So you can run two instances at the same time.

Give it a shot ;)

Any one know what a dangerous temp level for this cpu is?

I'm idling at about 36C on Stock and going to about 40C at full load (priming both cores).

Is 55C a good level to keep it under?

Those temps are fine, i would try and keep it below 55c on full load. Ive got my opty 165 @2.7 1.475V and it idles at 34c and about 44c load on the stock cooler :) . Got the GSKILL HZ 2GB kit at 245mhz 3-4-4-8 on a 166 divider, had it at 270mhz 3-5-5-8 2.8v but i didnt think it was stable enough for me.

Thanks for the headsup.

I dont know why its so warm on my CPU, but it just is. Oh well.

Come on Opty 170 owners / abusers. Lets get life into this thread so if people want to know who well the 170s clock they can easily see they do that very well ;)

Just a quick update for you all.

I recieved my TT Big Typhoon CPU cooler and a massive YS-Tech fan. It dropped my load temps from 51C to 41C at load, so I'm impressed.

So, i've bumped the CPU upto 2.8ghz with 1.375v. It now runs at about 42C.

And yes, it was priming for about 10 mins but hay. I could resist.

Comments will be well appreciated!

Scroll to the bottom

As per the writing on the link. Its pretty loud but does such a good job its mad!

That and I opened my windows slighty.

But i've been priming @2.8ghz and she does go above 48C. I'm very impressed with it indeed!

Also, I have been unable to get it stable at 3ghz. No 1M Pi or 3D mark. Shame. Oh well. It was good fun whilst it lasted.

im v close to ordering one of these puppies!!

Do it, but if you dont like noise then stay far, far away. It moves so much damned air though its nutz!

Mines a 408 aswell. Doesnt like too many volts, lots of people over at XS are reporting this aswell. I have pushed her to 2.9ghz already. BTW, watch your PWMIC temps go sky high when you get to 2.9ghz+...screenshot to follow @ 2.9ghz

Impressive!

I've noticed my chip doesn't like too many volts at all. I think i'll keep her below the 1.45v mark to make sure i'm on the safe side.

But for now I'm happy for a 100% stable FX-60 look-a-like ;)

Another update.

I'm at 2.8ghz, after finally finding the divider for the mobo, sill me , and i'm happily at 2.8ghz and all seems to be going well.

I'll be aiming for 2.9 possible 3ghz tomorrow.

Hi guys,

looking good so far but can I suggest you all slow down a bit and get some *meaty* stability tests done :)

32MB Super-PI is all well and good but I seen plenty of systems crash out during use even after that.

How about Sp2004.exe (small ffts) and Prime95 *max heat* options on both cores at once, while its doing that run 32mb Super-PI. After Super-PI has finished load up 3DMark03 or similar 3D-Demo and leave it looping for 1-4 hours (with all four primes still running in the background/2x95/2xSp2004).

Hmm, i'm in the middle of doing a prime atm, might have to do the others. Seems like a bit of a challenge... :D
