*** Official Planetside 2 Thread ***

Well being able to take any base at any time worked fine in DAoC. you just had tons of keeps that any one can take, and a single guild could claim that keep once taken to upgrade it. You could do a similar thing in planetside, let guilds claim a base/tower and upgrade it with automated defense (enough to hold off one or two lone players, but enough to hold off a real attack), this will encourage guilds to actully defend what they claim, give them some sort of benifit for claiming it and give the whole faction a bit of a benifit too.

I just think there should be more to it in terms of reasons to take the bases/towers. They should have more of an impact on the game then just being a spawn and a place to get vehicles.

Keep the Base structure almost identical to what it was in PS. It worked well focused battles on front lines, allowed for clandestine generator blow ups and back line ninja strikes.
Tech plants Bio labs etc etc, i likes it.

when the pops were up you'd often have 2 frontlines, a main cont then a secondary target for those who couldn't get into any decent fights on the primary continent, that meant that you'd always be able to find a big fight - which is what PS did really well and more importantly uniquely. Part of the reason for that was the restrictions on where you could hack and hold bases. Granted, generator espionage on a locked cont was a pita but you could always go and repair them.

PS2 if it ever arrives should maintain the "massive" part of FPS battles, not 12v12 or some other crap, but 100 + in various vehicles, armour and aircraft. There has still been nothing that I know of that has come near to that scale or buzz of last ditch resecures, defence against the odds or ninja hack and holds.

Re SOE not listening, they did eventually! I picked PS up around the time of core combat and pre-biffers, even around then people were crying out for new deployables and CE - which came eventually after everyone had left. It was clearly too late though.

In terms of fixing it, I think they had the dynamics not too far off being right. Maybe some tweaks here and there but if they take it down the route of *insert name of generic fps online shooter here* then it'll be a waste.

If they do make a Planetside 2 type of game, then they realy need to make some changes compared to planetside. For example planetside was fun, but I found that the bases you capture although fun, they had no real worth to them other than to unlock access to capturing other bases. I think teams should be able to take any base they want at any time, but have to be tacticle about it (for example taking the base right in the middle of a load of enemy bases may cut off enemies getting to the front line, but it will also cut of your own support getting to you easily).

It used to be like that in the Beta, I believe... and no. Just no. The lattice is the only way to focus the fights. You can see where the enemy can attack from, so you know where to defend. If they are about to overrun your base, you follow the lattice back and can work out where is the next best place to defend.

If there is no lattice, its just a game of cat and mouse. One team will run around capping bases randomly, while the defending empire is just playing catch up. There's no real fight, the defending empire will have no chance to mount a defence until there are only one or two bases left, as then they can properly defend.

It was, what, three years between core combat and the new CE? ;)

That is why there should be ways of detecting enemy, so the defending side will have radar and people on the ground to know where the enemy is, and where they are heading to attack so you will have time to get there to defend. What my idea also allows for is if an attacking team is not strong enough to get through a defence then they could send a team off to try and disrupt supply lines. And as for knowing where to defend you could even create the landscape in such a way that has bridges and natural terrain that creates key areas of the map that the enemy ground forces will have to pass through, unless they want to go entirely by air in which case the defending teams air power can move around freely to defend anywhere anyway.

My issue was that planetside was a little too much 'paint by numbers' type of thing, the options of what bases you can attack are quite limited, and once you take a base, its on to the next base in the link. There may be many ways to take a base, but there are few choices in which bases to take.

The PvP in eve online was great, they give you the freedom to do whatever you want, and its just that freedom that I want in an MMOFPS too.

Or you send a squad to every base on the continent and cap them all at once?

Maybe they could create larger lattices. Tech should allow them to create larger continents, meaning more bases and more options. Also, there could be larger and smaller bases. Maybe mini-bases that have some of the functionality of bases, but are like towers in that they don't need lattice links to cap? Maybe a vehicle pad, but it needs to have an ANT deployed at it to power it. Enemies could take the base offline by killing the ANT, defenders would try to keep it alive, and use it to draw vehicles for the attack on the enemy base?

the issue of sending a squad to every base would be that your numbers would be too thin. A few defenders who rush to a base along with any sort of automated defense would stop this. This would mean you could have 1 large attacking force, and 1 smaller force to be inserted behind enemy lines but splitting up any more than that should get you no where.

At the very least I think even if you can't capture bases that are deep under enemy control, you should at least be able to 'destroy' parts of it. Such as having some bombers fly through the enemy lines to bomb a facity that can produce aircraft, or bomb some sort of radar system. The base could stay under enemy control but you could temporarily stop them producing any air power (at least not without having to send their pilots to a further back air base which will take them longer to get back in the battle). So to capture bases you could use the same latice system but you could also have a group of people harass the enemies supply lines. I know in planetside you could destroy a terminal, forcing it to be repaired before anyone can build out of it, but for the most part you could simply go to a different base quickly and build what you want there, all bases were too general in that they could all basically build build the same stuff.

In other news - early next year we will have announcements about Planetside Next followed by a beta. I can say this - it's coming along awesome. I can also say that the first beta testers are going to be current Planetside subscribers. I've gotten a lot of email from current players offering to help test the game and we're going to take them up on it.

What a knob. The current subscribers will ask for stuff that will ruin PSN from the start.

We've announced publicly that the game is in development," SOE president John Smeldey tells Eurogamer, "it's a game that's codenamed PlanetSide Next.

"And we haven't announced a release date for it but you can expect it... We're looking at late first-quarter, early second-quarter [2011]."

That's the latest I believe.

After just seeing that I upgraded to a station pass so i can play this again, always loved PS and would be great to be helping test out the new one :)
Just please please keep the large scale battles, still makes my skin tingle to think of the huge battles with gunfire wizzing everywhere 8)

How many people still play PS these days?

Ncsambo / Naphtha / Mustasteez / Laka / Petebcool / Jolo currently playing on the regular :p
