*** Official Planetside 2 Thread ***

I'm a total noob at this game. Never really played anything like this online. Is there any guides for total noobs anywhere. I installed the game and loaded up to the 'hub' or whatever it was, but I didn't go in to any game as had no idea what I was doing.

'Hub'? You mean character creation screen?

If so, create a new character - faction of your choice. Then select a server, the main EU one is Eurydome - although can get full most nights. Name your character and click play.

Once in game - sort your settings to how you feel suits best and then get a feel. After, it's pretty self explanatory on what is what - but if you need more help just ask.

I was running around in an area with loads of other people but nothing else happened. I presume you have to go click on something to load a map?

What I am getting as it is more of how to play with other people, I rarely play online multiplayer games, last game I ever got involved in like that was Counter Strike Source and even then I was a bit rubbish and just did my own thing haha

You can instant action to an area via the map, but this is on a long cooldown... you basically get a vehicle / get in someone elses and head to the front. The hotspots are a tad unreliable right now, but it's basically a case of getting a lay of the land so you know where to look for fights.

It is definitely much better to play with either a guide to show you the ropes or get yourself into an outfit so you can get straight into some organized fun.

Ah, you were at the Empire Warp Gate. If you press 'M' to load the map you will see there's loads of places to go. :)

Best indication is to look for the 'hotspots' on the map. The warp gate is set out so that you can find and access consoles easily. Each console will show and image of a set vehicle - just to show which console is which.

Best way is to join existing outfits/squads already in game - you can see them via the social panel. And then just follow/join them and everything becomes clear.

More of a trial and error stuff right now - until a tutorial gets patched in.

If theres no galaxy at the gate (The really big planes) jump in a mossie (theyre easy to fly) and head to a flashing spot on a map. get shot down and youll be able to spawn local to the action - always look for a sunderer, theyre positioned close to where you want to go and follow all the little arrows on your map to the action. Try out all the different classes until you find something you like.

The thing to understand is that you don't join a game as such, you just head out and look for people to shoot. As mentioned above, bring up your map and look for the hotspots.

I've had a little ago, and aside from not really knowing much about the game, the biggest problem for me is performance. I'm playing at 1920x1200 with everything on low, and get about 30fps at best in a heavy fire-fight. I tried lowering the res but that hasn't done much either (which agrees with what's been said that the game is quite CPU limited). Whilst my PC is by no means cutting edge, I'd have thought it would cope better than this. The important parts of my specs are:

i7 920 (at stock)
HD4870X2
6GB RAM

Anything I can do to improve performance? Or just wait and hope that patches help me out a little.

12.9 cata drivers helped me with performance.

How do you spawn onto a team mate like BF3 or cant you? If I die do I need to run for 5-10 mins to get back into the action?

Squad leaders can unlock something called a spawn beacon which they place down somewhere and you can hot drop onto it from anywhere on the map

Hmmm not impressed, still hate the fog, why does AA need to be harder? I cant shoot down a bomber coming at me at full speed so if they hover in front of me thats their problem.

Interesting on the certs, hated auraxium anyhoo.

Because they're bombers, they would be pretty useless if a single anti air unit could take them down in one go lol  you can still demolish light air craft. The Skyguard has to be one of the most satisfying weapons in this game.
I absolutely love it when Reaver pilots hover right up close behind you so they can unload on a poor defenseless little Lightning, only to find that is no ordinary Lightning turret - WUH?? They never escape from that one :D

why does AA need to be harder?

Because there is a crazy amount of it. It can't be balanced around one man and his skyguard wanting to clean house. Especially when for the poor SOB flying about there are more skyguards, base turrets in most directions, AA maxes, Heavies with AA missiles and swarms of enemy air.

It was stupid a couple of months ago when air had complete control the skies and could happily fly around infront of dozens of AA emplacements without much bother, but it has been equally stupid for the last month or so where just one guy in one lone AA emplacement would create a huge no-fly zone.
