**Official Portal 2 thread**

There's a new box on the steam login window asking if you are a new PS3 player! *squeals* This is all too much! I'm going to spontaneously combust!

Unfortunately neither of us have the statistics of potato sacks sold since the event started. My suspicions is it's probably many more then you think though.

I personally didn't bother of course I was and still am perfectly happy with the original release date.

My point was that this event may end up being counter productive in the long run to valve and the indie devs as the reward doesn't seem to justify the effort being put in. Which is a shame in hindsight as something as awesomely planned as this deserved to be a resounding success :)

Well I think the problem comes in that this was a very clear marketing ploy from Valve to help support Indie gamers by tempting Portal fans with an early release...

The problem is that I'm willing to bet a very large percentage of the people doing this were doing it solely to get their mittens on Portal 2 early. From my following of the event a pretty impressive amount of people have been doing it also.

While on the surface it appears to be a win win, I think in reality a lot of gamers are probably starting to feel a little cheated and understandably so. I mean the current projected 16 hours early probably benefits most people very little when taking real life commitments and time-zones into considerations. Here in the UK for instance it will release at like 11-12pm tomorrow night, how many of the thousands of people doing this in Europe are going to benefit much from that exactly?

Seems to me this entire thing was pointless if it wasn't going to lead to a early Sunday release at the latest. In addition ironically I think at the end of the day the Indie developers may be the ones to lose out in the long run because of how many of the thousands of people that bought the potato sack to do this that will shrug it off and not bother next time?

Given that no hint of the ARG being related to an early Portal release was given until long after the Potato pack was released (only recently), why would the majority of people have bought the games for only that? If people have been buying these games just to make P2 pop early since then they're a bit dumb in my opinion.

I bought the few games I didn't have to get one that I had wanted for a long time on sale, and to just get a complete set of potatoes for the fun of it, even without any promise of any reward.

Nobody has made people buy the games or part with their money. People will benefit from the early release regardless of their level of participation. Why should they feel cheated because of something that they did of their own free will?

It's a bit of optional participation harmless fun imo. Just like every other ARG Valve have done.

Why offer the reward at all though? Why not just do the event without dangling the prospect of an early release in the faces of the fans?

I mean the potatoes are reward enough right? :p

For instance the game releases at 12pm tomorrow night, i would say a large proportion of gamers are going to bed or are already in bed at that time. Sleep and then work will mean they finally get home and play the game at 5pm'ish 17 hours later.

So in fact there was no reward at all other then the potatoes. Just seems like a bit of a let down for those that got their hopes up that they may get to play during the weekend, or early at all :)

That's a very UK centric view though. ;) In New York it would be 7pm, LA 4pm so plenty of time for the Yankee Doodles to get a go in.

:P

don't worry wasn't trying to intice some sort of flaming! :P

Can't wait to play portal 2 anyways so ill avoid the leaked vids!

Not too bothered if its out early but would be nice to play it tomorrow!

But the point is when people were first collecting the potatos there was no mention of an early release. It was jsut something that was connected to the portal 2 world and was interesting.

If the game comes out early it's a bonus, if it comes out on Tuesday then no one has lost anything and we still get to play the game.

Don't go on the Steam forums, unless you want the games ending ruined for you.

I didn't even read a thread, retards are putting it as their thread titles so everyone can read it.

Hardly a surprise. You'd be an idiot to go on the steam forum near release time anyway. 50% are posting spoilers and the other 50% are either posting random crap about the release time or complaining that the game is late.
