I know this was mentioned in the other thread but I thought it was such a big deal that it was worth starting a new topic for.

Initial announcement is here, I shall update this topic with more news periodically.

Valve announcement:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.

What's the deal with the underlined letters in the post?

drattmannh0nee

They gave a new login ident to the BBS. It's a long story. Here is a summary:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/62575

The 0 in "drattmannh0nee" could be the only digit for a reason. If you remove it, the other letters rearranged spell out "damn near tenth", alluding to a bigger announcement on the 11th March at the GDC.

Think I will wait until its released now & hear what others have to say about it rather than chance buying another dated dud (like L4D1+2).

I was a bit concerned about the graphics after seeing the opening gameplay. I saw the room the character was in and it looks just like L4D graphics :(. It was only when some light started streaming in that it looked cool, but maybe that was because they were using that movie making tool.

And what's wrong with L4D? In terms of gameplay or graphics? Both are still great. It really saddens me that there are people this concerned with graphics.

The fact it only requires shader model 2.0 is a bit of a giveaway. Nevertheless, it's the puzzles I'm getting it for.

Portal has never been about cutting edge graphics, Portal is about atmosphere. And the graphics are good, I love them.

If you don't want to participate, you don't have to. You still get it released early, no-one misses out.

Meanwhile there are a lot of people having fun playing the ARG and anticipating what is highly likely to be the game of the year. The fact that we don't know exactly when it will be released, only that it will be sometime in the next 48 hours, just adds to the excitement for me.

haha oh dear :p

The 375,466 milestone (rumoured) is coming up soon

About 1000 left to go. Should be there in about ten mins.

It's a good theory though, if you look at the stats of how popular Valve games are. If you have the same amount of people waiting to play Portal 2 who are also playing the ARG, and everyone only gets half the amount of potatoes each, that puts the Portal 2 demographic alongside TF2 in playing popularity. So it does tally.
