Does anyone use Socialblade guys?

No, I can't say I've heard of that before.

Do any of you have experience of using an encoding process such as VP8 or VP9? If so, did you find it worth it?

From what I have learned, VP9 (which is what YouTube uses, iirc) is the best for coding efficiency but does potentially have much, much longer encoding times. Earlier, I tuned my settings for VP9 and the encoding time would be, if I let it carry on, at least 48 hours for a 23minute video. Maybe I could make a few tweaks to lower the time somewhat; I'll have to experiment.

Instead, I'm now giving VP8 a whirl to see what the finished product is like. By the way, does YouTube allow you to upload H.265 encoded videos now, or is that still a no go?

Edit: I probably won't bother with VP8 again; fast moving game footage seems to result in a partially blocky video, though in some instances it does look better, imo. Also, since it takes around twice as long to encode as H.264 there seems to be little point in using it again.

Anyone using OBS Studio? Looking for x264 or Nvenc codec settings you are using. Preferably X264 as I can't seem to get multi channel audio working with Nvenc (refuses to record anything).

X264 records fine, just hoping to avoid several hours of tweaks to get a suitable quality output.

I use socialblade, its quite useful.

you can find out the analytics of other youtubers, get a very rough estimate of earnings of said other Youtubers.

Had a look at that, it only seems good if you are across multiple platforms? Its youtube stuff didn't seem to add anything on google analytics.

Has anyone partnered up with a company on youtube? Seen any results?

Latest video btw:

unless you getting a insane amount of views per week you wont earn anything from it. to make a wage per week you would need to be pulling in atleast 500,000 views per week which if you honest 99 percent of people will never do.

that would only make you about £300 a week.its basically 1,000,000 views = £600.

getting partnered unless you getting big views i wouldnt bother with while you growing. you will often get invited to be partnered by many smaller groups companies because they will get a percentage of your earning for next to no work.

if they contacting you that is a indication atleast you doing something right so why give money to someone for what you doing right anyway ?

so i wouldnt partner while you small.

Thanks, I don't know anything about the whole business side of youtube, so that post is quite helpful.
I'm not looking to be able to pull a wage, but it would be nice for my videos to fund my gaming habit. Would also allow me to set up a ltd for the videos and offset my PC upgrades against tax.... Long, long way off that yet though

DXTory Question

I've been using Fraps for years to record game footage but I'm thinking of buying DXTory instead because it records the microphone and game audio as separate tracks which is useful in editing.

So anyway. I've watched some YouTube videos and I'm happy with how to use DXTory. It seems fairly easy but the one question I have is which codec should I use? Each YouTube video seems to recommend using a different codec so I'm completely lost.

Can anyone let me know what codec they use with DXTory and preferably with a link to download it as well if possible?

Hello! We actually have a thread for sharing/discussing videos + streaming tips for future reference (not much activity in there lately but in case there are other tips in there you might find useful :)):

As for DXTory codecs, I think it's generally considered that the in-built codec isn't particularly good (in terms of filesize and performance). A lot of older recommendation online suggest Lagarith Lossless, although in my experience it performs optimally for games with more retro/8-bit or "cartoony" graphics... For full 3d games with "realistic" graphics I currently use UtVideo, which seems to perform very well for me.

In case you weren't aware though - if you're buying DXTory purely for the multi-track audio feature that is actually available in OBS these days as well (or "nearly available" - currently I think it only works when using "lossy" formats to record, but my understanding is it will be enabled for all codecs soon)

Thanks for the reply. I have installed OBS Studio in the past and while it looks good I think I'd rather stick with DXTory for the time being. If it doesn't work well then I can always move over to OBS Studio but I might as well give DXTory a shot.

Thanks for the info on the UT Video Codec. I've downloaded and will install it when I get round to actually using it.

you can get just as good results for free with obs and using the settings from one of jackfrogs videos :p

I'll add it to my watch later list and maybe see if I can use it later. Thanks for the link.

I'm actually using OBS Studio exclusively now, it records game footage, my two mics, teamspeak chatter and game audio into separate channels (4 in total), I simply remove those I dont' need later in editing which is a doddle to do.

Couldn't be happier tbh, quality isn't quite on par with Shadowplay IMHO visually but there doesn't seem to be any desync of audio with video so no need to run it through Handbrake before editing in Sony Vegas, done about 30 hours of footage that's now on Youtube scheduled and all of it was pretty effortless.

Only thing I'd like is an on-screen symbol showing I'm recording but I've got around this by having my external USB screen indicate used space on my recording SSD so I can see it ticking up which is just as good ;)

Before I forget - there's a few different color-space variants to choose from once you get into DXTory... I think I usually go with the 4-2-0 & 709 version... I can check when I'm at home

I'm planning to go full OBS Studio too as soon as they add the multi-audio stream output to the "custom / advanced / ffmpeg" recording panel (at the moment it only works with the x264 codec which doesn't meet my quality needs for recording)...

I used OBS for recording Dead Space 3 because the Origin overlay seemed to screw with DXTory for me, but due to the lack of multi-audio streams I had to let OBS record the sound on each game and record the 2 mics with Audacity (FYI our Dead Space 3 videos have 2 video and 4 audio tracks because we're recording the co-op from both player's perspectives... it's a little tricky to sync everything up but I manage okay!)

My nephew is after new video editing software.

He says blender is too hard complicated. He uses and editor on his iPhone at the moment. He is now thinking Filmora is what he wants.

Is Filmora any good does anyone know? Or is better cheaper alternatives out here? Thanks

What sort of editing does your nephew want to be able to do? The built in iPhone editor is fairly basic, so I assume he is looking for something more fully featured which will allow him to do more elaborate stuff?

Most of the "proper" video editing programs are pretty intimidating and complicated to use (at first) but in the end a good 70%+ of the buttons and settings are things you don't ever end up needing... Once you get used to the ~30% that you do need it isn't so bad. If he's willing to give Blender another chance you could check out "mikecal meyers" on Youtube - he has a really decent tutorial series for getting started...

I used that and it worked well for me.

Just finished a pod cast stream I got invited onto from people seeing my youtube stuff.

Need to rest my voice a little now :p

Just upgraded my setup for streaming, massive difference now can keep up with a hell of a lot more!

Should hopefully be starting my youtube up soon, will be asking for help with a few things. :)
