***Official Squad Thread***

Why are so many games staying in Alpha stages now a days? It seems like the new trend or something - Like the PC gaming world of equivalent of Hipsters, Vegans and transgender people!

Because in the time before 'nowadays' companies actually had to release the product to earn money. If they can release it in alpha and still make money, why wouldnt they?!

Yes and no I don't

I guess they want to make money without actually releasing it. But why?
Squad I have put 117 hours into - More than any other game in my Steam library and maybe ever. I would (and did) happily pay £30 for it.

Games have bugs all the time and are patched, why not just release it then patch after like other games

Maybe developers of Squad can offer a better reason for keeping it in Alpha. It does feel like I am getting more for my money when new maps and features are developed - Something with Battlefield 2 I had to pay for - Special Forces

lets be honest, squad is just tagged as a beta but really its MORE polished then a lot of AAA titles!

Squad is still in alpha because it's not feature complete. Beta stage is where the game is fully feature complete and the focus is on bug fixing/stability/"optimisation" etc. Well that's how it used to be before all these big "AAA" companies skewed people's perceptions of game development.

As for staying in early access, I can only speak for Squad. Seeing as we're still very much in alpha it wouldn't make sense to not be in early access as it's just exactly that: An early look at a game still in development. The problem is people still not quite understanding that at this stage in development things won't work correctly, focus not on "optimisation"...there's going to be bugs etc. I imagine when we hit beta it will be out of EA and handled like a normal release.

Remember that games take a long time to create. We're talking 4/5 years at least for a v1.0 release normally.
