So are you denying that have posted about staff leaving? About uncertainty surrounding the product after the acquisition? If you search your username and Untangle you mention the acquisition more than once and variations on the phrase "Who knows?" also come up more than once since the acquisition. Certainly you're keen to let people know they were bought and that you think the future is uncertain.
I don't recall posting about staff leaving. I may have mentioned once before about uncertainty about the home product as they've been acquired about Arista which is a valid concern, no? Let's all install Untangle at home, spend time learning it and setting it up. What might then happen is Arista may not seem the home segment as profitable and may choose to end it. It is far from uncommon that in takeovers non-profitable parts of business are axed. I recall posting about a maybe a dead community forum and complete lack of support for a home user (unless paid for).

They occupy a bit of a grey area. They are waaaaay beyond Netgear, ASUS etc. and they compete in many ways with corporate/enterprise gear like Cisco, Aruba and Arista but the really big corporates still probably wouldn’t see them as truly enterprise.

For home use they can be a bit OTT and they really come into their own when you expand your system. So you start out with two access points and you decide you want to add one on the front of the garage to update your Tesla and one for the back garden. In each case it’s literally a case of plugging them in and clicking the ‘Adopt’ button. And you can have a whole ecosystem with security cameras (overpriced but easy to work with), VOIP phones (overpriced but stupidly easy to deploy) and even lighting (Overpriced and just WHY?).

Their access points are right up there with the very best. Their switches are decent value for money and

their routers are close but just seem to fall down when you push them.

I'm certainly not going to fall out with you over it, but the search function does throw up quite a few, shall we say, 'concerned' posts on the subject.

All I can say is that right now, today, they will sell you a 3-year Home licence with guaranteed daily updates for the virus and malware signatures. So they're going to support it at least that long. When they withdraw the 3-year licence then I'll start to worry.

Please don't buy anything WLAN from MikroTik. I don't think they have a 4x4 AC product available yet, let alone anything AX. They insist on writing their own drivers for the Broadcom chipsets they use and lets just say they're not as good as their routing software.

Welp, my second Ubiquiti hardware fault is definitely here. One of my US-8-150W switches is on the fritz, cant handle more than about 15W of PoE without struggling and throwing PoE devices in reboot cycles.

Just managed to nab an Aruba switch until I can replace it with either another US-8-150W or a switch lite 16.

whats a good WLAN to enable wireless connections to my network? Just grab some Wireless access points and call it a day?

What are your clients? there are various flavours of wireless lan - A, B, AC, AX and then you get into the MiMo and the MuMiMo and without knowing your clients it's impossible to suggest anything sensibly. If you just want an off-the-cuff recommendation then get something from the Unifi U6 range. U6-Lite is OK, U6-Pro and -LR and decent and have tiny differences in spec that are really nothing to do with coverage and the U6-Mesh pretty much does it all in a tiny tubular format. None of them will make you unhappy.

Have people heard much about Firewalla? That looks like a decent unit (the gigabit firewall/router), but obviously its own OS.

Since it can be used in transparent bridge mode, it might be what I need for URL/parental granularity to use along side the gateway. Though I'd still need to upgrade my USG to do that, so perhaps just going to the Firewalla Gold or Purple for routing as well would do.

It’s a very similar product to Untangle and pfSense. If you look at the Gold hardware it’s basically an N3700 or J4125 passively cooled firewall appliance and it’s the software that makes the difference between the three products. Even the bundled functionality is basically the same open source components linked together. So it really comes down to which interface you prefer.

thanks for the advice above - i have ordered 3x u6-lite and a poe+ switch so am looking forward to better wifi around the house and garden.

does mounting them horizontally or vertically make a significant difference in coverage?

Horizontal is better.

another really stupid question - i plan to disconnect my existing deco mesh system then powerup the first u6lite i have installed. Does the u6lite need to connect to an existing wireless network (which i won't have) or will it let me setup a new wifi network from scratch?

Not a stupid question at all. You need to set up a network in the controller (or on your phone) and then adopt the access point to that. While you can set up the first access point from your phone, if you then want to add another one I believe you still need to be running a controller so better to do the controller first then adopt the first access point then adding the second access point is simply a matter of adopting that as well. Everything in the first access point will then be populated into the second and its no more than 3 clicks to get it going.

You'll be able to setup a new WiFi network. If you wanted, you could give it the same name and password as your Deco system so that any clients you have should automatically connect to the U6 Lite without you needing to add them to the new network.

cheers - that is what i thought but had a sudden dread i couldn't as when i setup the deco mesh i turned off the wifi and removed the aerials from my draytek router, and i can't mind where i put them!

My clients are work laptops and usual mobile phone devices and printers

Looking at moving to a half decent home wifi setup and would love some advice

Currently looking to replace a couple of ASU’s routers which are covering wifi in the house with a dream router downstairs and then hard wire and AP upstairs for wifi

So

Virgin router in modem mode > dream router covering downstairs > upstairs switch covering wired devices> wired AP for upstairs wifi

Shopping list

Dream router
Unifi 6LR

No issue spending more or less and will be looking to utilise gigabit speeds where possible as on Gig1 and also have a home server for plex so like shifting 1/2 streams of 4K sbout at a time

Any thoughts on alternates ?
