Another new product...

That’s more like it. It’s the UDR for people who require more than 4 switch ports. The fact that you can repurpose it as an omnidirectional access point is even more interesting. And the price actually looks downright cheap for what you get.

Not really if all you are doing is running a couple of AP’s.

It’s worth pointing out that you can cloud host it for free. Instructions were posted a few days ago in this thread. You can also run it on a Raspberry Pi or similar for a lot less than a cloud key.

I do use a cloud key G2 plus but I’ve got 2 switches, 4 cameras, a door bell and 3 AP’s so I actually need it (or a UDM etc.) to run the camera stuff on.
Could I get the AP's, run them off my phone and then, if I upgrade my Ubiquiti network beyond this, add in a Cloud key later on and transfer control from the app?

No. It’s the most basic SPI firewall but that’s all most routers do anyway. This is basically the basic home UniFi system starter kit for people who don’t want R2D2 on a shelf by the front door. It’s a gateway drug to the full cabinet in a cupboard….

Yes, I believe so but if not, it’s not that difficult to set up from scratch if it’s just 2 APs.

As long as you set the WiFi SSID and the password to be the same, all your devices will automatically re-connect.

Edit: also have a look at the device the last new posts have been discussing which also has a network controller built in.

Cool. I will think about getting the APs and trying with just my phone.

Do you mean the Unifi Express. Will see how it is received and think about whether or not it'd work for me. £70 cheaper than the Cloud Key and doesn't come with a hard drive I probably wouldn't use so a double bonus if it suitable for my use case.

Their marketing material is really vague then, it talks about having it join a network as an SD-WAN appliance which you'd assume means it has to be managed by a Network instance.

Yeh, you only need the hard drive if you go down the Protect route.

The included 1tb disk is only sufficient for a single camera for 30 days storage. I think 5tb is the largest capacity you can get in a 2.5” drive.

Once you shell out for the cloud key and a 5tb drive, you’ve spend £400. At that point a UDM Pro (or SE) looks like a more attractive product and you can just slap in a regular hard disk with way more capacity.

Sorry - I’ve got my controllers mixed up. You can’t use the controller on the UXG-XP to control other networks.
That's sensible, it doesn't have the beans and people would push it too far.

I can't really see why they bothered releasing the Express and the Gateway Lite, people would have paid for the Express and turned the radio off if they didn't want it.

It’s the same argument for the UXG-lite. By the time you’ve bought a switch, a controller and an access point you may as well buy a UDM SE and an access point. Or a UXG-XP for that matter.

You just feel they’re drifting around rather than having a focused strategy.

I think the info has been pulled from data mining apps etc.
UDRULT is the SKU I saw mentioned. Who knows TBH.

My requirement for my parents will essentially be leave pfsense in place as it's working perfecting (just need to complete the site to site VPN) or consider changing it to an express lite and manage it via Unifi portal. I am also considering the hosted option via Oracle or via my cloud key with a Lite, but for simplicity sake, the express is more appealing. Personally I'd like to see and Express option without the Wi-Fi element, but with the extras in the routing / security areas.

Another consideration is what are Unifi devices like when it comes to IPV6 as parents are on a CGNAT / IPV6 connection. So want to leverage IPV6 as much as possible. pfsense is currently configured and working with a dual stack setup etc.
