Hence:

"I believe the seamless handoff requires a local controller to be online, but most devices handle this better themselves anyway ruling out the requirement for it." :)

But both are incorrect.
Seamless handoff required a controller, not necessarily local but either way is now deprecated (and I believe not an option). Devices don't handle the handoff, it's still on the Unifi system, rather than it being from the controller, the L2 wifi connection now handles this.

Looking at overhauling my network infrastructure and the PN router is not going make it through.

To ensure decent wireless coverage over the house I'm looking at Ubiquiti for the access point. My intention is to locate it toward the centre of the house. The stairs ascend in the middle of the house, between the lounge and dining room and I plan to put all the network gear under the stairs.

I'm considering UAP-AC-LITE, UAP-AC-LR and UAP-AC-PRO. Does the all radiate 360 degree signals? I know these are often ceiling mounted, and this will likely be ceiling mounted but under the stairs. Will this cover upstairs properly or should I be looking at a second AP mounted in the ceiling upstairs?

On the face of it, the Lite looks like it'll do what I want - but then when considering the clients I see that the Lite doesn't have 3x3 MIMO, which my Macbook does. I have a NAS that the mac backs up to, so it does get used for file transfer.

The other clients are a few of phones, tablets, another couple of laptops, a mac mini, internet radios, ~8 Chromecasts and various IOT devices.

If I want to go for something with 3x3 MIMO, should I go LR or Pro? I remember reading that the LR can cause problems with some devices - I don't remember the specifics but it was about them showing a high signal strength but that not being accurate, and that dropping when data transfer was attempted.

Can anyone offer me any advice?

I'd only care about 3x3 MIMO on 5GHz which leaves you with the AC-PRO.

I have an AC-LITE on a downstairs ceiling and it covers both floors (better downstairs where it matters most). I'd always allowed for having to fit an additional access point upstairs but haven't needed to.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like it's going to be the Pro.

Mod note:

Why do we have threads like this, never understood it. The whole point of a sub forum is that it groups similar threads, and then the questions get posted in those threads.

Smashing everything into one long thread just because it happens to be a question about a particular manufacturer seems daft. We don't pay per thread, why the worry in using them?

If I want to know about Networks and Internet Connectivity I'm not going to read every post on this sub forum, similarly if I want to know about Ubiquiti I'm not going to read this entire thread.

https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi...able-Candidate-has-been-released/ba-p/2081597

New Features:
  • Add RADIUS MAC Authentication.
  • Add Firmware Manager to cache locally firmwares.

I've been running this for the past few days and it seems much more stable than 5.6.16 which cause my setup few problems (associated/bundled firmware) with my US48 switch and USG. The The lastest firmware and beta 3.9.1 on the USG seems to have corrected my logging problems. I do like the firmware caching feature with this new release.

https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi...62-for-UAP-USW-has-been-released/ba-p/2075123

Firmware changes from 3.9.0:

  • [UAPG3] Enable SHA512 support.
  • [UAP] Implement backend for SNMPv3 support.*
  • [UAP] Fix a RADIUS related bug with fast-apply.
  • [UAP] Numerous backend fixes and/or improvements.
  • [USL2] Fix PSU status detection.
  • [USW] Fix a bug preventing DHCPv6 from functioning in some cases.
  • [USW] Fix an issue with removing VLAN tags.
  • [USW] Various backend fixes and/or improvements.
*controller support is pending.

I have an AC-PRO and AC-lite, both are excellent, sadly I don't have any devices that can take advantage of the 3x3 MIMO yet, but both perform superbly and offer good coverage. The AC-Lite is wireless uplinked to the PRO.

I had bit of issue this week after I upgraded my USG gateway to firmwre 4.4.6.502, it also changed my Cloudkey controller to 5.5.50 and when the cloudkey rebooted it couldn't load my settings as you cannot migrate the database backwards from the beta 5.6.16. So I had to reset the cloud key to default and then SSH in to the USG to WGET the new beta 5.6.18 controller onto it. I didn't need that hassle after a long day at work. All working perfectly now and all seems very solid.

I'm having issues with Virgin and slooow downloads. should be 200 but only getting 50'ish

I've called them up and they want me to disconnect my router (security gateway) however this doesnt appear to be as simple as just unplugging the SH2ac straight into the switch as I then don't get internet.

My connections are as follows

SH2ac
Security gateway
Switch

I also have a POE switch connected to the main switch but that should matter

How do I get this to work so VM can tell me there nothing wrong but they'll up the power anyhow

You can if you get the IP ranges correct, but:
  1. You'd be double NATing.
  2. There'd be no point as what you're trying to do is test the connection without any influence from your equipment.
  3. It's so easy to change between modes for testing why would you bother?

Ok. I've unplugged the vm router from the usg. And plugged it into my switch. I can now only connect via WiFi. No wired desktops can get internet access although they can see each other on the network

Any idea

That's the subnet mask not the subnet.

If the USG is unplugged from the VM router why are you looking at it all?

Have you tried the basic stuff on the desktops like an IP release and renew (or just rebooted them)? If you've set static IPs on the desktops then it's a self inflicted injury.
