Hi all,

Ive got a machine which is full of spyware and viruses...

Are there any spyware/virus removal tools which I can use offline as I dont particuarly want to put it on the network.

So basically after something I can download with the latest updates and then put on a cd and install?

Also needs to be free

Spybot - Search and Destroy
Adaware Personal Edition
The Microsoft one is good too

Personally, i've got Spybot and Adaware installed. Adaware gets rid of all the harcore stuff. Spybot gets rid of anything Adaware might not have detected.

how would i get the latest updates for the and install on the not networked (stand alone) machine?

in answer to your question lol you cant, they didnt read ya post.

you wont find a decent app that doesnt need to connect to the net to download updates. thats part of the idea behind them, as new stuff comes out therir updated.

Everything is too reliant on a net connection now days.

Just speculating here, but if you were to install some of these programs on another pc and update the definitions.....

Would there then be any way to copy the latest definitions onto a cd, so that when you install the program onto the other pc, you can then "update from cd/file"

I'm pretty sure adaware has a feature where you either chose - "update from internet" or "update from file"

Might be worth looking into.....

thats the kinda thing im after. This is bascially at work, and a director has brought in their personal laptop which is full of spyware, worms etc. I dont want to put it on the network in case its got any nasties but they dont want me to wipe it

I will have a look at adaware and see if I can download the updates and apply from file.

I would look at using a combination of BartPE and its McAffee plugin. It has instructions on extracting the definition file from the downloadable McAfee update and including it in your Bart disc image. You can also do this with Bart's Adaware and spybot plugins.

The advantage of Bart is that you are operating in a separate, read-only environment so its totally safe from infection and gets around any file-locking/hiding being done by any infections on the machine. The downside is that you have to re-do the image and burn a new disc if you want to update :|

spybot have defenition updates in an exe that update, and adaware have a defs.zip file, extracrt it to your adawre directory and overight the defs.ref file with it

burn the setup files and the two update files to disc and go!
