Oh dear... Corsair PSU looks to be dead. What should i do?

its the pick of the draw I guess like with anything, but I guess psus are more likely to go wrong then anything else cos its the main source of power for your system.

Count me as another failed HX620

My 12V would drift down towards 11V before the PC shut off ... following a nice cooling rest it was fine for another half hour.

Cost about £27 to send via royal mail ... ouch

Will buy enermax next time. My old 465 is still going strong 5 or so years later ... and it even has 33A (400W) on the +12V rail it was so far ahead of it's time.

Enermax has a UK return center for cheap returns if it should fail

By any chance have you guys got bottom psu pc cases and mounting your psus fan side down in the case?

I have a bottom PSU case but there is plenty of fan clearence to draw nice cool air as it sits on a 1 inch shelf with a cut out. (Antec P180)

Am I right in saying that's the best way to check if the PSU is stable? i.e if I look in bios i can see 12v 5v etc and next to it numbers which I presume are the current otput levels of the PSU - should these numbers be as close to the '5v' or '12v' as possible?

Kind regards

My power supply blew because the house surged it, you should look at buying a surge protector adaptor. Just a tip really, I'm going to get the 620 corsair so hoping it doesn't blew like a lot has.

More examples...lol

I have read the hiper explosive thread. So far we can add 4 to the Corsair Go's Pop thread

Just having a bit of fun :P

If we are counting, you can make that five :p

I dropped a screw in mine (HX620) when building my pc, all was fine untill I turned the case on its side and powered on :(

Although my other HX620 and HX520 are rock solid :)

Anything less then 10mm/1cm fan clearance, your restricting the ammount of air that the fan can pull into the psu.

I had a corsair 620w die a few months ago, it even sparked at the plug when it died which is strange 0_o, i sent it back for RMA and had a replacement in a week or so :D.

My vx550 died earlier in the year. Etailor collected and replaced within a week. No cost to me. This could only be done within 1 year of purchase though.

Why are you all sending them to Corsair when your contract is with the retailer in the first 12 months? You should'nt have to pick up the tab for the postage either which is another reason why you chould use the retailer.

i've had my HX620 for over two years and it has been faultless and the good thing is, i still have 3 years of warranty left :D

Psu is not bottom mounted - quite a lot if case fans too. As I said, it may have been faulty from the off, but I took the retailers word for it... I'm not sure this one can be fixed by leaving in a garage... It has (unfortunately familiar) smell of burnt Pcb track to it. Another note - the pc was in a surge protector, which still indicates it's in good shape. Just been unlucky I think - I bought it for their good reputation.

^^^^^^^^^^

Mine was outside the first 12 months and I have never seen it written in law that the retailer has to pay the return postage even within that time.

Some do offer to reimburse postage or arrange collection if this is within the first few weeks but in my recent RMA with overclockers I had to pay to ship an item back that was fautly on reciept. No offer of postage or collection was made though once the RMA was finally generated the item was replaced smoothly enough and has been faultless since.

Hi all - update if anyone is intertested. Got my new PSU this morning (fantastic service from overclockers - ordered at 16:30 yesterday, got here before 8 o'clock this morning!), fitted the new PSU and so far everything seems to be fine. As far as i know, no damage seems to have been done. All fans spin up, correct amount of RAM detected (will look to do a memtest soon), GFX card still alive and well... So far all HDD drives seem to be alright (will download HDDtune later) and sound card too... think i may have been lucky, but i dread to think what may have happened if i had been using a no-name PSU!

Thanks for the advice given - it was much appreciated. Hopefully will not have to go through this again for a while!

Exactly what happened to me, TX650 popped, tripped the main but took nothing with it, retailer collected the PSU for me though.

Got another Corsair but was too loud and hot, gave up and finally settled on PSU in sig.

Corsair should send us a pre-paid package to RMA their PSU.

The sale of goods act states that "the consumer should not be financially penalised for the return of faulty goods". This applies in the first 12 months and the retailer has to either arrange for the goods to be picked up or, more commonly, reimburse the consumer when the goods are found to be faulty. Retailers are using consumers ignorance of this fact to save themselves money.

OCUK will arrange the pick up at their expense for items found faulty on reciept. But you do have to ask.
