In recent threads I have been discussing my proposed new build. Well, today, everything arrived as expected. I have spent all day putting the parts together and then (no monitor connected) I turned the power switch on - Nothing! :( well, almost nothing, a little light on the mono flashed on and off, then nothing.

Is there anyone out there who wouldn’t mind spending some time helping me to figure this out please?

All the best
Bob

Hi guys, I used to build mu own computers from 1995 to around 2005 I think but I haven't done it for quite a long time.
McNumpty my component list:
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £2,167.11 (includes shipping: £14.70)

The PSU manual is next to useless. There is of course the obvious power connector to the ATX socket with 24 pins. There is also the sockets for the 8 pin connector with the 4 pin socket next to it, however, I don't appear to have a corresponding lead for the 4 pin socket. So two of the leads that came with the PSU are marked CPU and have an 8 pin plug on them but no 4 pin. I have therefore only connected the 8 pin.
SSD Hard drive is fitted to M2M
RAM is fitted to B2 and A2 (checked for proper fit).
Front panel connections I will re check in the morning.

Thank you for your responses guys

Hi guys I really appreciate you all trying to help, it's great. Thank you.

So, not tried the basic setup with mobo out of case but today,

1 stripped everything out of case.
2 Cleaned yesterdays arctic silver 5 off both CPU and cooler.
3 Re-applied the arctic silver as per the instructions for the Intel cpu on the Arctic Silver web site.
4 Moved the RAM to the other two slots & ensured enough pressure applied to spring the end clips into locked position.
5 Re-seated the GFX card.
6 8 pin CPU power connected.
7 CPU fan connected.
8 Chassis fans x 3 connected.
9 24 pin MoBo ATX connector pushed in.
10 Front panel connections all made and as secure as they can be.

NO USB keyboard or mouse connected and NO monitor (it would be a TV via HDMI)

Power on

Red/orange leds by the Ram and Red LED on the chipset flashed on and off. No fans spun or even tried to, nothing other than the brief flashing of LED's and no error code lights displayed.

OK, so:

Rang Overclockers and spoke with tech support.
First thing was to try just one stick of RAM moved to each of the 4 slots - no improvement
next suggestion remove CMOS battery for 15 minutes (I left mine for best part of an hour) = no improvement
next was to remove cooler, remove chip check for bent pins etc, then connect PWR supply cooler fan/s and one stick of RAM assembled outside of case on box or in my case rectangle of plywood.
Chip seemed fine regarding bent pins

"Start it up touching flat-tip screwdriver on the two PWR pins (where front panel connector PWR leads usually go)." - Oh, they didn't tell me that bit

"Did you get any beep codes? -" No, nothing, just a brief flash of LED's by the RAM and the chipset

"Your PSU is similar to mine. Yours has RGB. Are the cables pressed firmly home on the PSU? They should light up. Are they in the right sockets? -" Well, they certainly didn't light up at any stage of the proceedings

So, after trying everything you guys and the tech support suggested, OCUK tech support have told me to RMA the Mobo, Chip and PSU. They are now somewhere in Daventry's Homebase waiting for DPD to collect them :(

Thanks McNumpty and thanks to you all for taking the time to try and help, I really do appreciate it and yes, I’ll report back when OCUK have returned or replaced my parts.

All the best
Bob

Well, that’s the end of the first week and I’ve heard nothing from Overclockers. I must say that being as the components were less than 2 days old and I followed the advice of their tech support which proved unsuccessful before sending them back, I’m very disappointed in the response or lack of it from OCUK. As this issue was discovered 2 days after delivery, I would have hoped they would have sent replacement parts straight away.

I posted here because I said I would keep those chaps who tried to help me informed. Strange I didn’t see your name when folks were trying to help, yet you post here now.

Hi McNumpty, yes buddy, I did check my spam folder but no, nothing I’m afraid. I was rather hoping for a parcel instead of an email but hey ho!

I had a whinge to OCUK today and initially after a week of having the parts, the only thing tested was the Power supply. Apparently this proved to be working correctly. Neither the Motherboard or CPU had been tested at the time BUT by the end of the day I had 4 separate emails. One stating the power supply was being returned with “no fault found” Another stating the CPU was being returned to me with “no fault found”. The email regarding the motherboard just said one was being sent out to me with a new order number “subject to stock availability” and the last email said it had all been shipped and should be with me tomorrow.

So, although no clear statement that the motherboard was DOA it would seem from those emails that it was in fact the faulty part. I just hope everything goes to plan when I start the build process again. I guess it’s Watch this space.

All the best
Bob

High Orbitalwalsh ;)

Yes, not the best service from OCUK but since my whinge on their customer service page things have started moving and my parts should be here this afternoon. Then may the Lord help you lot when I start the rebuild for the 4th time LOL.

I don’t flaming believe this. My parts arrived a few moments ago and on opening the PSU box to start getting ready for the rebuild, there was NO power cable in the box or lead wallet.

Hi guys, no the lead wallet was in there with (I hope) all the other leads, just no kettle lead. I have stolen one from my ultrasound cleaner for now.

BUT......... I am back at square one, nothing happens at all. Except a brief flash of LED’s by the RAM and chipset.

I have assembled the components outside the case, on a wooden table with a cardboard layer between the MB and table.

1). Insert CPU ensuring the correct orientation
2). Insert the RAM in bays A2 & B2
3). Insert the SSD PCIE into slot MvM (the short one)
4). Clean CPU and re apply the arctic silver 5
5). Install the cooler and attach the fan and cable
6). Connect the ATX 24pin to the MB
7). Attach the CPU 2x4 power lead to the MB
Then connect those leads to the respective sockets on the PSU
8). Plug USB keyboard into rear I/O USB socket
9). Plug USB mouse into rear I/O USB socket
10). Plug HDMI into rear I/O HDMI socket and connect to TV
11). Ensure PSU is switched off
12). Plug kettle lead into wall socket
13). Switch PSU on
14). Watch as the tiny LED’s flash with no further response.

I am at a complete loss as this is exactly what was happening with the faulty Motherboard.

Right, so I’ve been on to OCUK tech support and explained what I have done and the fact I am getting the same result as before. Tech support and I came to the conclusion that as unlikely as it may seem, I have got another DOA motherboard. It would seem that Gigabyte MoBo’s and I are NOT friends. Now the suggestion is to RMA this board and purchase a different brand.

Guys, I tried the no SSD on the first board but it made no difference. When this board did the same thing OCUK Tech support just said RMA and try a different brand, so I immediately stripped it down, parcelled it up and sent it back. I will be receiving an ASUS Maximus XI tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes but when I build it, I WILL first do so out of the case (as I did today) and without the SSD fitted. In fact, I will do just CPU, Cooler and one stick of RAM with Keyboard Mouse and Monitor plugged in.

And Thank you ALL for your input, I really do appreciate it.

We cancelled our lottery ticket purchases ages ago :)
Hopefully I will have better luck but things do usually come in 3’s.
One thing that puzzles me is that the crystal sockets on the power supply do not light up at all, does anyone know when/under what conditions they should light?

As always, thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated.
Bob

RIGHT...THAT'S IT...........New Motherboard arrived today (along with the kettle lead they forgot to return) so the rebuild started.

MoBo, CPU, Cooler and one stick of RAM built outside case....AND.........

BINGO! :D it only bloody worked innit!

so

MoBo, CPU, Cooler and one stick of RAM and one SSD drive - YES!

So

dismantle (again) and rebuild Inside the case - YES

So

Add GFX card and use that instead of onboard GFX and also add second stick of RAM and.............YES! :D

The only trouble now is trying to understand the hotlink I seem to have to NASA's control centre, I think its called the Boggling Information Overload System or something.

Thanks guys for all your support, you've been great oh, but if there are any budding astronauts....errr, I mean Boggling Information Overload System engineers here please stick around ;)

cheers guys, Im Soooo relieved, I thought I was going daft LOL.

I'll have a look at the XMP thing, I also have a newer BIOS to put on but I think I'll just enjoy a working PC for now, I don't want to wreck it just yet :D

I have somehow managed to miss most of the posts on page 3 of this thread.

Mrbell, I am so sorry for missing those posts but I sincerely thank you for reading those manuals and trying to help me.

Regarding the stepping of the CPU I have no idea so will have to research how to confirm that.
Regarding the ATX PSU connections, yes, I did connect both the 4 and 8 pin connectors as like some of you said, the power supply connectors could separate.
I’ll see if I can find where to check the RAM speed when I get back as I will be away from the computer for a couple of days, returning late Friday night.

The computer was running Black Desert non-stop since yesterday and when I checked it this morning everything was fine, so it seems as if (dare I say it) all is well.

When I get back I’ll sort out flashing the BIOS to get that up to date.

Once again, thanks to all of you

Best regards
Bob
