Oh good grief, I need a new graphics card.

Asus TUF 4080 OC here.
Good cooling, quiet, stable, no coil whine, moderate power requirements.

£1299

4090FE is in stock now. I know the OP said he was strict on the budget, but spending another 300 when you are already spending 1300 gets you a significantly more powerful GPU….

Depending on what you have at the moment, maybe consider the Sapphire Pulse RX6800? Currently in stock for £530.

Or, there's the 6800XT for around 600.

I assume both cards will handle your resolution quite well, though I suspect, especially where the 6800 non-XT is concerned,
you may need to turn down the odd setting in some games.

I'd be buying the 4090FE if the option was open to me, but Nvidia in their infinite wisdom don't make them available in all countries. I need to find a trustworthy pen pal in the UK!

It does, but you have to draw the line somewhere.
We already in the zone of buying an Xbox Series X, a PS5 and a decent watch instead.

The 4090 is 32.2% faster than a 4080 in raster and 38.7% faster in RT while having 50% more VRAM for a 33.3% premium. Never in the history of GPUS has the 2nd tier card had worse price to performance than the halo card and the 4080 is the epitome of all that's wrong with the GPU market right now, buying this card gives Nvidia the green light to continue this farce.

So is buying a 4090 really. People are telling NVIDIA that they will pay any amount as long as there is perceived value. Arguably, buying any card is sending the wrong message.
Anyway, I would expect most people on an "enthusiasts" forum to go for a 4090. I just can't afford to.

The 4090 is a halo card and not supposed to have good value yet the xx80 class though has always been about good value in relation yet now offers worse value so validating this move is against your own self interest now and moving forward especially if you tend to buy every cycle.

I've always thought that if you can afford £1200 for a 4080, you can afford a 4090 for £1600.

Because if the difference is a deal breaker, you shouldn't be buying a 4080 in the first place.

Such a (relatively) poor card in terms of price to performance.

My vote for grabbing a 4080 FE. Although I am glad I don't have to buy a current generation card.

Do it my way.

Set a price you're willing to pay for a specific card then wait for it to hit that price.

Unless my 1080ti burns out I'll stick to this plan.

It's not a matter of "affording", in my view. Many people (myself included) have the disposable $, but have a hard limit as to how much they will spend for what is, functionally, a video game toy. It gets to a matter of principle, and to a point where the "value" diminishes compared to other toys/hobbies i.e. investments in leisure. And this is not unrelated to the fact that there are diminishing returns in perceived fidelity the more expensive the card. Moreover, there's the utter distaste most of us enthusiasts feel for the hand-over-fist price increases across the last several gens, this one being the most egregious.

I've related this story before, but for the price difference between a 7900xtx and a 4090, I was able to buy a new-to-me power rack for my gym AND a kayak. That's a lot of leisure vs. ~30% more FPS which is arguably marginally discernable in many situations.

I have to say that the plan has been thrown in to disarray by the game "The Last Of Us", or more specifically the video that appeared on Youtube explaining why the performance is so bad. This has put some real doubts in my mind as to whether I should buy the card in this (sort of) price range with the least amount of RAM. Maybe I should go for the 7900xtx or the 4090 instead? I mean I am not planning on buying a card for a long time after this one, so maybe it would be unwise to get a 4080.

What rez are you planning to run at?

Because I'm playing TLOU at 3440x1440 on a 3080 TIFE with a PS5 pad, everything at ultra, DLSS on performance, and it rarely dips below 100fps (my monitor limit).

Zero stutter and it runs butter smooth.
