OH MY WORD! Deus EX complete on Steam £3!!!

What i would like, is for someone who has done it, to put up step by step instructions into how to find, install and make the updated GFX and HIres or superres texture packs work with the steam version of the game.

I fancy replaying it again, but would like to try with updated GFX, and googling has left me rather confused as to what actually exists out there and what doesn't.

Ask and ye shall receive ^

Deus Ex 2 is enjoyable if you try to forget all the good things about the first game - that's the only way I could somewhat 'enjoy' it. I often try to imagine it's completely unrelated to Deus Ex and is a standalone game, which helps.:p

Deus Ex 1 though is definitely one of the finest gaming experiences I have ever had the pleasure of playing. I've played it again quite recently and it seems quite dated now even with the new gfx mods but back in its day it really was leaps and bounds ahead of other games.

high Res texture pack works with the Steam version too....just need to do the below, i just did it and worked a treat :) - google saves the day again :p

Instructions to update steam edition

Try locating these two files:

DeusEx.ini
HDTP.ini

Then find these lines in HDTP.ini:

Quote:
Paths=..\HDTP\System\*.u
Paths=..\HDTP\Textures\*.utx

And copy them to the top of the "Paths=" list in DeusEx.ini. Then run the game

Thanks for that, did what you said, then do you just launch thru steam as per normal?
Somewhat confusing as within steam I don't seem to be able to find any differences, is there any notification that the pack is actually installed?

Its a bit weird as i actually thought there was a newere more recent pack, not the 4 year old beta version which seemes to have only one incarnation. thanks for the help anyway.

Looking at the hdtp download page, it says its a demo? I'm guessing there's not a full version then?

Also, looking at wikipedia there's several other texture mods in addition to the hdtp? Are they any good?

Tbh you may aswell get both for that price if you don't have the first. The second isn't a patch on the first but its worth a play through.

doesnt appear any different, just a boot file in the game folder that activates the textures. couldnt see another version, if you look at the website the textures should match up to that of your game, did with mine.

I figure i've done something wrong.
In the steam directory, it appears to all be installed correctly.
A desktop shortcut was created to the hdtp.exe within the steamapps/common/deus ex/system directory
Running deus.exe runs deus ex as does launching it from steam, but using the desktop item or the hdtp.exe directly seems to do nothing.
It gives an error message, 'Failed to find steam'

Well started playing it, can see why it's so highly praised. Will need to try and get into it a different day though, don't have the time for learning curves at the moment!

I was quite shocked with the voice acting, it's far superior to a lot of games out today.

Awesome game - takes a while to get into, but Deus Ex is a true classic.
Invisible War is a more console orientated Deus Ex, but worth playing for NG Resonance - a great character.

I wont waste any time singing the praises of Deus Ex. A cursory google will throw up nothing but good things. It's one of those special games.

Deus Ex 2. It did take me a long time to get around to it, but it was more to do with being out of touch with gaming in general than the knee jerk backlash the game got. I did not hate it, nor did I think it was a blight on all that is good and holy. Sure it's "streamlined" for a broader market, smaller levels, universal ammo, amongst other "colossal travesties". But at it's core, and I think most level headed fans of DE will admit, is plot, and it did a good job.

If you can bring yourself to tolerate the fact your special place amongst the gods has opened it's doors to filthy immigrants, it's a great little game.
