Oh no. Gigabyte 7970 lockups in wow. I'll be returning this for a 680 methinks.

Well that's funny, because my GTX680 is a nightmare in WoW. Driver Recovery errors all over the place. The card is barely warm and fine in all other games so it's looking like a driver issue.

The irony is that when it crashes I can't log back in as it seems to be a problem with wherever I am at that point, so I have to log in on my laptop which is (you guessed it) ATI powered and doesn't have a single issue and move the character somewhere else so that my nVidia drivers will work again.

Sadly it's too late for me to DSR, but first chance I get i'm going over to a 7970.

I'm just gonna chime in aswell, I have always used ATi cards and never had any issues, Switched to an nVidia and had major issues with WoW.. Back to a 7950 now and same stability I have experienced for years with ATi. I've only ever owned 2 nVidia cards, and both have been a nightmare.

Summary: both sides have issues in WoW. Marvellous. We don't need to hear a million stories about driver problems people have had. When you're having issues with said game the grass always seems greener but before you switch read about if the other half are also having problems. Chances are they are so if you switch and get the mentioned issues you're going to be a) out of pocket and b) no better off.

10 stories saying "I'm fine with AMD" don't really mean anything and vice-versa.

My 7970 runs WoW perfectly, never had a lockup to date and Wow is primarily the only game i play :)

Check what? It runs Furmark and 3DMark fine, passes Memtest and Primes for hours.

It's a driver bug, simple as. Otherwise i'd get issues with other games as well.

No problems with WoW or Diablo crashing for me useing the 12.7 beta driver.

But if you look at the WoW forums you will find just as many people with Nvidia cards Complaining about poor performance and crashs as you do with AMD cards :(

If it was my PC why would it work fine with my GTX 570 in? The only time i'm having the problem is with the 7970 -_-. And I frankly cba messing around installing / uninstalling drivers left right and centre. I've been a Nvidia user for years now and never had a problem running ANY games. And I always update to the latest driver.

Trawling the web there seems to be many more people with AMD issues than Nvidia.

That is the most ridiculous comment I've read on here all week.

Utterly stupid :(

How?
Op says his 7970 is a poc cus it crashes hia pc on wow andused diablo 3 as an exampe of crap amd drivers. When infact both games run perfect on 7970s for other people so in turn itsbeasy to deduce that its his pc thats the issue.

Why did you not get another Nvidia card ?

There are many people using 79xx cards with no issues and there are many people using 6xx cards with issues. Changing the GPU from green to red usually involves a bit of work and cleaning up as does going the other way.

If you can't see how it's stupid then I'm not going to explain it to you. I'll open your mind a little though:

Assuming level of intelligence is constant across the sample:

  • loads of people are having issues as well with 'x' card in game 'y'
  • loads of people are not having any issues with 'x' card in game 'y'

Are you deducing from this that the people in the first list are not intelligent enough to rule out any issue from their PC? It's up to the game developer/driver developers to make sure their software works properly. All this loose talk about "problem in your PC" is complete rubbish. I'm not ruling it out, I'm saying that summarising this based on the information you had is stupid.

I noticed the 7970 was only £323 reduced - read a lot of positive things about it. The minimum 680 was around £80 more at the time.

If the software did not work we would all have issues. Use your brain.

Fair enough I would stick with the 7970 and work out the problems it's all part of being a Pc gamer. Upgrades can be a pain to get running right but are usually worth it in the end the 7970 is a superb card. I own and play both Diablo and Wow and have not had any issues with either.

Could be worth posting the rest of your spec and what drivers etc you are using.

What are the issues you are having ?

Edit - Or just look at your sig.. :D..
