Oil Usage

Why, given they would throw it right back at you?

becuase many new polos are on long life service intervals which is 20,000 miles between servicing and using up 4l in that time would empty the sump. this means you would be essentially having twice the amount of oil changes in that time and at £15 (more soon the prices of VW 501 and 502 are expected to head up) a litre the cost adds up.

plus 2l in 10,000 miles is pretty bad on its own and hardly confidence inducing, if it was an engine we rebuilt the customer would certainly be demanding repairs for free on garantuee.

this isnt a high performance turbo diesel engine it should be nowhere near that level.

The handbook reminds you to check oil levels and topup when required. The engine would be within tolerances - there would be nothing wrong with it which would neccesitate replacement. Your dealer would laugh at you.

Do you have published specifications for oil consumption, though?

Some engines use oil, some don't. As a rebuilder of engines I dont understand why you are having such a hard time grasping this.

No VW will do an extended drain service interval without a top up.

Half the reason they can have such long drain intervals is due to the top ups, these 'top up' the used additives in the engine oil.

Infact 1litre / 5,000miles is very good!

In the old days of 3,000mil oil changes you probably had similar consumption, just that you didn't notice as it would still be above the minimum when you drained the oil and changed it, refilling to the max mark.

Low viscosity fuel efficient oils pass into the combustion chamber past the rings much easier and engines will burn a bit. Modern oils are developed with this in mind so that engine deposits (and DPF blocking) is not too much of an issue.

I put about 1 L every 2000 miles in mine, which as Fox says seems fairly normal.

It doesn't seem to use any more oil regardless of how I drive it, but seems to use less of Mobil1 0W-40 than it did of Castrol Edge 0W-30.

yes, only upto 2004 though the 2004 polo 1.4 (AUA and AUB engines) we have as showing 0.25l to every 12000km under normal operational parameters.

i know some engines burn oil and some dont, if you hadnt noticed iam not debating that, your having a hard time struggling to grasp that the rates given here by many are very high. but that may simply be the driving style of the user base.

Ive never had a car in that bad, iam getting more and more chuffed with my little 200, by what iam reading here barely spilling 0.25l in 20,000 miles is almost divine intervention.

the s2000 with the f20c2 engine doesnt give me any info but i would expect about .5l per 6000 miles

My car is 7 years old now and in the 4 years Ive had it, Ive never had to top up the oil ever, the car does have an oil change every 3k miles typically

Hi there

The Mustang was very good, It would use about 0.25l maybe a tad more every 2500-3000 miles. :)
The supercharger itself had a service interval of every 100,000 miles.

The CSL I am unsure, but Elliot tells me they use very little oil and the car has an electronic oil guage anyway which is pretty cool, along with two warning sensors should you not check the guage. :)

My diesel mondy has used nothing as far as i can see in the 6k or so i've had it for and now has 83k on the clock.

The escort uses a little, depending on how hard its driven, but that is inevitable. Nothing excessive - perhaps 0.2 of a litre in 3.5k of hardish driving (but only when fully warm!).

How people expect turbocharged cars to use none whatsoever is beyond me.
