Ok, I have never really spent much time on consoles. Probably less than an hour total in my life (not counting the Atari when I was a kid), so not sure what to get.

So its down to Wii, 360, or the PS3 (actually, possibly even a PS2 due to the large number of titles and low cost).

What I need though it reliability, and I have heard there are lots of failures with 360's.... so kinda hesitant there.

What games do I play? Well, on the PC I play mostly shooters, and some strategy. I will keep playing these on PC. I suppose it will be fighting games and racing games.... maybe some platformers...

The Wii are almost impossible to get hold of, so guess I should take it off my list....

So, considering am new to consoles, should I just get a PS2 and see how I like it? Or will I be put off by horrible graphics? I have no idea what most of the games look like.

Or should I just go straight to 360/PS3, and how do I choose one of the two?

I think its definitely down to 360 or PS3. Both consoles are good for fighting games and racing games so not much to separate them there. What will you be playing it on? you'll want something HD to make it worth it. If you have an HDTV then again both are suitable. If you want to play on your pc monitor then it'll have to support HDCP if you want a PS3, with 360 you just need the VGA cable. The best bet is to look at the games out now and the games announced for the future and decide which list looks better. It does sound like you should do a bit more research before you buy, its always better to hold off until your sure.

360 every time, if you pick up the right package it can be dirt cheap, and some of the top quality games go for about 15 to 20 quid. Better online OS, but PS3 has free PSN.

What kind of TV do you have, Would you be interested in the Bluray on the PS3? That's a high definition movie media, That's the next step from DVD. (Incase you weren't aware)

If you are going into this just for the games, Then 360 would be a good bet, Reliability is a factor, Just make sure you get one of the newly built 360's and I would think you would be okay.

If you want something for games, and some High Definition movie madness, Then I'd recommend the PS3. Great console, You'll get access to all the PS1 back catalogue, Which from the sounds of things, You've missed out on! (Some corkers on there) But unforunately if you can't find a 60gb version, You'll get no PS2 back catalogue. As the 40gb console doesn't play them.

The Exclusives on both platforms are becoming very strong.

PS3 40gb - Great games, PS1 back catalogue. Bluray Movies. Online play is Free
PS3 60gb - Great games, PS1 and PS2 Back catalogue. Bluray Movies. Online play is Free. (Like rocking horse Poopay)
Xbox 360 - Fantastic games. Live is fantastic.

I would go for the 360, so many games to choose from theres bound to be at least half a dozen you will love. For fighting you have dead or alive, virtua fighter, devil may cry and racing you have test drive, forza 2 or my favourite project gotham 4. I would also recommend mass effect.

Will just be playing on standard def tele...

I have no idea which of the games I will like, so no idea what I should be looking out for... Its hard for me to base my decision on games, when I am not familiar with them. Are there games like tekken for the 360?

Basically, what puts me off the 360 is reliability and what puts me off the PS3 is price. But if the PS3 is more reliable, then will just pay more. But I hear the new 360's are OK - but how do I know if I am being sold a new or old one?

I truly favour neither of them. Just trying to get the best platform.

360 has both DOA4 and Virtua Fighter 3, DOA5 is rumoured for this year as well. Reliability is becoming less of an issue and if the worst comes to fruition then you're covered for 3 years (for RROD). If you get a 360 you could play it on your PC monitor, HD really is worth it. It doesn't matter which console you get, if you're playing it in SD then you aren't gettign the most of it.

What is PSN? Playstation Network? If that is free, that is a big selling point. I don't like the idea of having to pay MS for multiplayer... I forgot about that!

indeed

PSN = playstation network, which is currently free, but IMO of course not well supported

LIVE = is a joke, for 40 pound you don't even get dedicated servers, its all P2P, BUT the LIVE operating system is better, this is all IMO of course

I think you should get the 360, and when the ps3 has enough going for it + a cheaper price in a few years get that

You know what... I have never really seen HD in action, so have no idea what I am missing out on... and as they say, ignorance is bliss :)

Am not worried about HD just now... am not THAT much of a graphics nut :)

I got a 360 on a SD TV at the start and was still blown away by the GFX, I'd imagine the PS3 is just the same, that said you should look at a HDTV eventually

Had you got a decent monitor, as you can buy a VGA cable which will allow your 360 to output at High Def on your PC Monitor

Ok, think you guys are bringing me round to the 360.... but like I asked earlier, how do I know if I am being sold a new or old system?

I suppose its a bit senseless getting an console without a hard drive?

i would get the premium (the new name should be the PRO system)

IIRC all you need is for the box to say HDMI and you should have all the new gubbins, HDMI, new cooling etc

Wait for someone else to confirm though

well as your a pc gamer, SD is 640x480, 720p is 1280x720. Its a massive leap in image quality.
