i want to run a network cable from downstairs to upstairs and have the proper wall sockets installed.

NO wireless isn't an option as i want to use pc upstairs as main gamming pc and wireless drop outs are a big no no.

so what are they called the wall sockets and where do i buy them.
what type of cable is it pacth or cross over around 15m of it

cheers all ~:)

You want RJ45 wall sockets. Any Cat5-E cable should do the trick for the cable. I assume you already have the necessary networking equipment.

i plan on leaving my router plugged in downstairs where it is ( downstairs/back of house) and running cable outside and back in (upstairs/front of house)

phoneline --->DSL ROUTER ------> socket <------->socket -------->PC

look ok? normal cat5 or crossover?

There is a place that sells that type of stuff, but I can't name it. OCUK doesn't sell the the wall plates but you can get them from a DIY superstore. They are called RJ-45 outlets. The back boxes are standard fare though. Just make sure you get the face plate and the outlet modules. Some are combined, some are seperate.

Cable is either Cat 5 for 100Mbps or Cat6 for 1Gbps

Then you just need to follow the colour code matching the colours on the backplates to the colours of the cables. I used a telephone IDC tool which cost about £1 for a plastic one. get a couple as the break easily.

Also you need to split the cables usinging a router with DCHP, your ADSL or Cable one will be fine.

Cat5 works just fine at gigabit speeds. That's what it's designed for. You just need to be careful when making your cables, that's all.

You just need a normal wiring configuration. "Crossover" cables are for connecting one machine directly into another; the cable itself is the same, the difference is how it's plugged in at the ends. One pair of wires is switched so the outputs from one machine are the inputs of another. When you're using proper networking equipment this is unnecessary.
