Old £20 Notes

It's up to them after today. They don't have to at all.

You can always send them to the bank of England for exchange to new ones though.

EDIT: Just to add, most banks will take them for a little while yeat (couple of months or so) but they don't have to.

What'd be awesome is in about say 2 years, give someone about £50,000 in these 20 pound notes so that can't actually do anything with them. I'd love to watch their rage when they realize.

Pretty sure they could still get the money, it would just be a lot more hassle to them. Just because the notes are no longer in use, doesn't mean the value they represent suddenly disappears (we're not Zimbabwe!)

There's always a cut off date! :p

Either that, or give them £50,000 but in fake money.... with a tiny note on them in the right corner which reads "LOLZ this ain't real cash!"

You sure? [link]

Are old Bank of England notes worthless?
No; all Bank of England notes retain their face value for all time. If your local bank, building society or Post Office is not willing to accept these notes then they can be exchanged with the Bank of England in London. For more information on how to exchange Bank of England banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation see the exchanging banknotes page.

Actually, no there isn't

The Bank of England said:
Genuine Bank of England notes that have been withdrawn from circulation retain their face value for all time and can be exchanged at the Bank of England in London. There is no fee for this service.

The Bank of England will accept any Sterling currency at face value no matter how old it is. You could have a 1755 £5 note and they will give you a brand new 2010 £5 note to replace it.

If you do have an 18th Century £5 note I would however try Christies or Southerby's first...:)

Where would this £50,000 in twenties come from in the first place?

You can even take a current note to the Bank of England and exchange it, but you'll only get another one back. Still, might come in handy if your notes have accidentally been laundered (providing there's enough of it left).

/me taps the microphone *cough* - 3rd post:
