Old 60GB / 80GB HDDs - any use anymore? Or scrap

smash with a hammer and put in the bin. don't waste any more time with them HDD's.

The platters are now coasters, the grandchildren are enjoying the magnets, the pcbs have been recycled with electrical waste and the aluminium bodies, and steel covers will go in the metal skip. JOB DONE!

nice. Are the magnets any good/useful? I don't think that I have seen a HDD magnet. Perhaps next time I have a HDD for disposal I will open it up.

Once when i was bored at work, which is often, i took a drive apart.. put a smiley on it with a felt pen and then we had bets in the office to see how long it would take scandisk to give up - it actually booted, and tried bless it but nope it gave up after an hour of frantic head movement.
That was also the same day i took an old slot 1 celeron, taped over the power shut off connector and boiled it so hard it had the solder come out from the bottom ... funnily enough it too didnt work again.

Used to do some daft things in the old day when we were board (or it was a friday afternoon), one other particularly daft one was using the HT from an old 15" monitor to "light up" the components on a motherboard - funnily enough that board also didnt work afterwards either, although to be fair some of its bits were stuck in the ceiling
