Old ADSL connection on my line?

I moved house a few weeks ago and had the BT line in my new property reactivated. The BT people said there was currently no broadband services on the line.

So, last Friday, I went ahead and ordered Be Unlimited and they confirmed there was nothing on my line and I have an activation date of 3rd Nov.

However, for no particular reason, I plugged my old Netgear router in today and it synced at 8k! No IP address, presumably as I had no username or password configured.

This gives me the impression that there may be a problem with my activation on Friday. Has anyone had something like this happen to them?

Hmm, possible I guess, but I just logged into the BT website and had a look at the orders against my line and the work is stil listed to be completed on the 3rd. Oh well, I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

By the way, for those that don't know, you can track orders for home phone lines by clicking on 'Small & Medium Business' then 'Track an order' and then logging in as normal. For some reason, the Track Order option is not there for the 'At Home' section of BT's site.

Hmmm, using the bt test login, the router now gets a WAN IP and DNS etc, but I cannot access any sites. Seems odd and I'm now dreading that my activation tomorrow with Be is going to be screwed up... :-(

For future reference, that is exactly what should happen.

You will get a connection (WAN IP, DNS details etc.) but won't be able to use the connection to do anything. Otherwise everyone would be tapping in the BT test login details when they want to plan a top secret terrorist plot ;)

The only explanation that I can think of is that the previous occupant's ADSL max service was still active but BT had removed the relevant flags off my line allowing me to place an order.

Am I right in thinking that the ADSL part of my line is disconnected from BT's equipment in the exchange and hooked up to the LLU's equipment? And hence it didn't matter that BT (or another IPStream provider) was still connected as my line was switched from their service to Be's, cutting off the the old ADSL in the process.

BT's ADSL kit, yes.
