Old cars that keep on going

I was gonna add in about Rovers. The old slipper cars seem to keep going. I see loads about. We only got rid of our H reg 416gti workhorse last year when a lorry blind sided it.

I've seen some really old XR3 cabrio's around my way. They seem to keep going. Probably because they spend half the year in a lock up. That and the wedge shaped Honda CRX's.

Still see a fair few cavaliers, they seem to run forever, my neighbour sold his with 380k on the clock and my mates was nearing 200k. I can see k11 Micras being on the road for quite a long time, they do have a couple of spots where rust attacks them quite badly though, bar that very little else goes wrong.

My dads old volvo 740.
It's been used as a work vehicle for over ten years and has been absolutley hammered around the farm land and building sites, every year it got it's mot with no repairs.
He wanted to get a 4x4 when it failed an mot but it kept going, in the end he just parked it up.
It's been sitting there for two years now. I'm thinking of putting it back on the road while I do a house build.

Yea but.. you rarely see these anymore. Yet Cavs and Fiestas are everywhere.

Its a fair point. There are a few running around, but nowhere near the number of cavs.

friend of mine has a 1996 vauxhall cavalier 1.7td still going strong after 212K on the clock good condition too no sign of rust.

a lot of old toyota's here (starlets&corollas) and a lot of honda's (accord, civic, prelude, crx) too...
Old golfs&merc's are also familliar sights here in the NL.

Lol my dad is driving a '93 corolla with 383k km (230k miles) on the clock and just passed MOT 1 month ago and still going strong.

My daily run-around is a 13 year old Citroen AX debut. 110k miles and not at all in good nick but the car just will not die!

Mine's 16 years old... 41k.... if only this was top trumps you'd be owned. Its a bit mouldy on the roof lining, and leaks a bit throught the back door so I give it another year max

I see quite a few 205's about...have a couple on the driveway.

My Mk3 Fiesta wasn't going to last too long as it had a lot of rust all over it!

I wonder whether old Fords in general were just built very well?

Depends on how old you mean! My dad has a 1954 Mk1 Ford Consul in the garage (as a toy sort of thing, not his everyday car!) and that's solid as a rock, not a spot of rust on it anywhere. But they built them like tanks in those days I think. The metal is a lot thicker than is used on cars now.

Nissan Micras / Volvo 340 / 360 / 240 / 740 - seem to last a long time.

Old Mercs seem to last well, as does the older 3 series.

A few weeks back I saw about 4 or 5 1990 ish Micras in a week. That included one that i'd sold just before that as well.

Indeed, I just sold a load of bits off of my old G Reg one and the rest went up the breakers to get flattened in their crusher (it was falling to bits).

My mums got a G reg 1989 Renault 21 2.0 Auto that's still going strong to this day - and she loves it! Won't be parted from it!

Theres a fair few on 1996 N plates and a few have made it onto 96-97 P plates. Although your right, these are just late registered ones.

Renault 19s and Fiat Tipos

G/H reg 1.4 19s everywhere. I know of several with well over 200k on them, still going strong.

Same with Tipos. Fully galvanised and the mechanics are bulletproof. See them all over the place. Unloved, but just keep on going.

Old mercedes' are still rolling around on the roads. Mercedes' reliability was amazing until they got drawn into the electronic madness fever . Hence why their newest mercedes E actually took a step backward in terms of electronics.
