Old rig advice

That's because bad PSU can damage/kill rest of the PC.
You wouldn't try running your car with fuel contaminated with water and what ever, or would you?
That's the equivalent for what bad PSU can do.
And because of low quality parts and bad design garbage PSUs are lot more likely to fail badly.
Fair enough mate, I take your point

I have spoken with the supplier of the mobo and told them the situation and what i'm going to do and they are happy to have it back should the problem continue

Anyway, I orignaly stated the PSU was ok so i'm now for the moment going to assume (like you guys are saying) it works just enough to power the pc but its failing with any additional load like the gpu

so after looking, i was thinking this might do the job (EVGA 700 BR)...consindering what it's for i dont wanna spend to much more...what do you guys think?

I've read good things about Seasonic whilst looking, that one was a little more than i wanted to fork out for...would you say there was big difference between the Focus GX-650 and the Core Gold GC-650 650W

i'm not sure what i'm looking at when it comes to PSU's...SHOCK!!!
You can get this for £80

PSUs designed to be garbage are OK after way too many years of use only if voltages and ripple are measured to be inside ATX specification using oscilloscope. (costing price of multiple good PSUs)
Wouldn't wonder any if such garbage has secondary full of bulging capacitors by now.

While better than that Xenta that EVGA is standard lowish end PSU.
Also EVGA doesn't trust it to last more than short three years.
Vs. 10 year warranty of Seasonic Focus telling something about intended life time.

Core Gold is cost downed version with cheap basic sleeve bearing fan, shorter warranty etc.
There aren't much reviews of those cheaper variants, so hard to say precisely what has been cut away/compromised.

Solid choice. You probably would have been ok with the EVGA you were looking at, mines got all kinds of protection...

“Heavy-duty protections, including OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), and SCP (Short Circuit Protection)”

Full spec here...

BQ isn't BR.
And with EVGA being just brand on sticker BR might be made by entirely different maker.

Nice to know that I would've picked a fairly decent one if I'd been stuck on my own

I feel happy knowing the board can go back if this doesn't cure any problems but at present the system works (without a GPU) and runs fast for my usage and I know if this does get sent back it will cost me more as it was a good deal so would like to get it working if I can

I dont mind upgrading a few things like the PSU / GPU as I bought them at the same time 10 years ago and the GPU was 2nd hand. These things ideally need updating whether the mobo works or not so happy to try these

I read a bit about people not making sure their PSU is good enough in the past but never had the need to replace mine so haven't looked into the goods and the bads...I guess it's not something where you see a performance gain like CPU/GPU so people feel reluctant to spend the extra cash

Ok guys the PSU arrived this morning but no change.

I set this up with both cards and it's exactly the same, I then tried it with my old mobo setup and neither card worked in there...both run the integrated graphics absolutely fine.

Personally, I think I’ve just been very unlucky with timing that both cards no longer work

This all started when it stopped working about a month ago, at the time I was just running the HD4890 so swapped it with the GT640 which worked a few times then stopped...I think the fact it worked with the first time on the new board was just it's last bit of life and now it's gone.

I also think that fact the board can detect the HD4890 but throws up an error along with detecting the GT, albeit only once, kinda tells me the board could be ok...if one of them had worked in the old mobo setup I'd be thinking different but neither card working in either mobo is telling me the cards are dead...also the HD4890 in the old mobo with bios set to PCIE only doesn't boot.

Only way to be 100% is another card, which I don’t have

Unless anyone has ideas, I’ve got a decision to make...

I have an update...

It looks like I was unlucky with both the old cards...I've put a new GPU and work's no problem, the timing of the GT640 breaking couldn't have been any worse

It's only a GTX660Ti that I've bought but a definet upgrade from the HD4890, it even worked in the old mobo so slightly dissapointing I bought more than what was necessary but for what I need this for is now spot on

Had a stroke of luck as well, I was gifted a i7 3770 which means I've now gone from a Q6700 to a i5 2500 to a i7 3770 for free, apart from the case, DVD, SSD and HDD it's basically a new PC for about 150bones

If this is still working in 12 months I'll be happy, Thanks for the help
