i got this rig about 5 years ago. was gonna sell it to help fund a new rig.
but im thinking i could keep it and use it as my window
into overclocking seeing as im a learner instead of riskin
the new rig. heres sum specs.

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Board - Asus A8N32-SLI DELUXE (Socket 939)
Chipset - NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 (NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 + NVIDIA nForce4 SLI)
System bus - 2000 / 1600 MT/s
Board Overclocking Features - AI NOS. AI Overclocking. Precision Tweaker. SFS. Overclocking Protection.
Expansion Slots - 2x PCI-E x16 - 1x PCI-E x4

Memory - 2GB DDR
(but it says on box for motherboard that it has "Dual channel memory Architecture")

GPU - BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (its an Overclocked edition)
Core clock 580Mhz Memory clock 1700mhz

I no the memory is a bit ruff but wot are the other parts like
would it be worth fiddlein around with? :)

Should be able to hit around 2.7-2.9ghz depending on cooling and chip as long as you live it unlinked and don't touch ram which probably won't go far ; ).

2.9 sounds good. :)

wot is DDR Dual channel like for overclocking?
would it be worth trying to get 4gb on the cheap
and filling the board?

I had the 5000+ and managed to get it to 3ghz (from 2.6) on a crappy ASrock motherboard, so you should be able to get some extra juice out of it.

Yeah, that's cas3. The good stuff back in the day was 2 2 2 5, but most of the stuff around was something like 2.5 3 3 7.

You should still be able to get a good overclock on the cpu with the cas3, because that mobo was a decent one, so I'm sure it'll have ram multipliers in the bios.

would i be able to use PC-3200 184 pin DDR Ram ?

heres a bit more info off the box on my board memory support

- Dual Channel Memory architecture
- 4 x DIMM, max 4GB, DDR 400/333/266, ECC, non-ECC, un buffered memory

Stick to what you have, it isn't worthwhile to add more to your current system. Also, 4 modules of RAM will hinder overclocking.

Hey jakesnake,

you may not be aware but that antique hardware fetches quite a good price @ auction . . . it would make more sense to get that sold off now and put the proceeds towards a new system . . . most seasoned computer enthusiasts on this forum do exactly this . . . buy new hardware, get the system up & running then get the older hardware sold to offset the upgrade cost ££

Whatever worries/doubts you have about frying/bOrking your hardware when *tweaking* the new system are not based in reality and only in your mind :D. . . myself or one of the other OcUK crew will talk you through the really simple steps and make extra sure you do everything right . . .

Just finally get your head around what new kit you want, get the order in (credit card?) and hopefully within a week or two your new system will be up and running . . . once that’s done your gonna need to clean and dust off the older socket 939 kit, get some photos taken and list it all up separately @ auction . . .

I'd say by the time you pay all the fees and stuff you should clear about £150 which will hopefully arrive in your bank account before your credit card bill comes . . . Can't say the whole process of taking pics, making listings, wrapping and sending the hardware off to its new home is the most fun process but at the end of the day it's well worth doing . . . money towards your new hardware and effective "recycling" of your existing hardware . . . win win situation!

I feel bad for the people that buy this for those prices :(, you can get brand new AM3 setup for less in a shop.

But then some shops aren't better, selling 2yr old GPUs for the price of new ones.

[Off Topic]

Hey PhoenixUK :)

I understand why you may think that . . . I've got a different perspective on this though . . .

Each "separate" item can restore a previous broken system that met the buyers technical needs, instead of forcing them to "junk" the whole system and spending hundreds £££ on a completely new machine, in that scenario they are actually very pleased to pay £50 odd to purchase a quality used part that is no longer produced new . . or costs too much if purchased new . .

Somebody out there may have a MonoCore 939 system that is beginning to struggle so a DualCore gives their system a bit of extra life (£50) . . . or somebody else may have all the parts they need for a spare system in their GhoulBox (£0.00) with the exception of a processor, once again a minimal outlay of cash (£50) and they got a perfectly fine surfing/downloading/iPlayer/Home-Server etc machine . . .

If somebody else has a 939 machine that met their needs but has developed a fault with the mobo . . . again they would be happy to buy a replacement chipset (£50)

2GB of DDR400 currently sells for nearly the same price as 4GB of DDR3 so again the person with an older but perfectly useful 939 system that has had its memory go bad is happy to buy some quality used ram to save some money and get the machine working again

And the graphics card is still perfectly useable for someone playing games on a HD display (1,280x720)

I wouldn't feel bad about it unless the same buyer bought all the items together . . . because as you said they could have bought something a bit newer and bit more powerful for the same outlay . . . I don't think the latter scenario is very likely!

sounds good. how do i get into the members market?
Hey jakesnake,

You will get a better price if you sell at "auction" and not OcUK members market . . . they will haggle your prices down to pennies! :p . . . The OcUK MM is a great place to pick up bargains though! ;)

Not sure of the joining criteria off the top of my head, you need to activate your , make a certain amount of posts and be a member of the forums for a few months I think?

OcUK Haggle Den

i dont have original boxs tho, how much of problem is that?
Not much of a problem, just make sure you clean off the hardware and wipe any kebab stains away, take some nice pics and verbally describe as much as possible . . . . ultimately the important thing is to convey/show that the hardware is 100% working
