Old skool: What was your first 3D card and game?

16MB 3dfx Voodoo Banshee. First 3D game was Quake. Then I discovered that the guy I'd bought the PC from had left a copy of some game called "Half-Life" (along with a mod called Counter-Strike) on the hard drive...

s3 Virge I think, not sure if it was a card or built-in chipset on the mobo anymore, can't even remember what game, too long ago and was very young :p

I think my first computer (a Viglen) came with a Rage 3d card that didn't seem to be compatible with any games.

I'd been playing Quake 2 in software mode for ages when I finally put a voodoo 3 in my machine (it was a Christmas present). I was amazed with the graphics and the 180 FPS I was getting. I also got Quake 3 that Christmas. That was a good day. :)

16mb diamond viper 550

I think my first pc game was dream web by empire interactive... I think.. not sure I have a bad memory and this was a long time ago!

mine was a 6600gt which was for bf2! never really got into pc gaming before then.
i then moved up to an 8800gts on release which was the envy of all my friends when I showed them Dirt running!

16MB 3dfx Voodoo I think. was definitely 3dfx

and fifa 97 and MDK that came free with the computer. Oh it was so bad so so bad.

MDK was ace don't get me wrong but fifa 97 was not good. Revolutionary crucial to the development of fifa but horrendous

I remember playing Ultimate race and yeah it was good, but Quake etc on the 3Dfx was much better...
I always thought it was the other way around. PowerVR had 24-bit colour, higher resolution, Quake just looked so much better than what 3DFX produced, 800x600 or even 1024x758 with 24bit colour was great. There was a bit more messing around with drivers but once you got it working PowerVR was way ahead of 3DFX.

It might have been actually, I honestly can’t remember. I do remember there being a big fan war back in the days of Power VR and 3Dfx. There was even a web forum dedicated to gamers arguing over which 3D accelerator was better. I was a member, 3D dimension was it?

I remember Power VR owners taunting 3Dfx owners by running their games in Windows whilst also browsing the net, I also remember them going on about how they had better clarity due to there being no pass through cable etc..

I had both the 3Dfx and Power VR at the same time, I do distinctly remember playing nearly every single game on my 3Dfx purely as I felt at the time the 3Dfx was performing much quicker – back when fps were the stuff of dreams.

Quake timedemo anyone??

some £80 power vr thing, wasnt very good, not sure it even did anything
bought because it was half the price of the 3dfx card

think quake 2 was my first 3d card game, coloured lighting being the only thing though ha

Voodoo 1 for me ... and this is a cracking tribute video :)

I'm rubbish at embedding ... never works :(

Voodoo II - Monster truck madness
laterly a tnt2 ultra - man i loved that card - was a brilliant era in pc gaming. NFS porsche unleashed etc :D

Same as most here, Voodoo 2, but dont remember the first game - I had drooled over PC games for a while before I got my first PC, so I went out and splurged my Uni grant/loan (was in the last year to get a grant :D ) on these:

- Carmageddon 2 (remember crying with laughter so many times)
- Klingon Honour Guard (throwing Batleths!!)
- Half Life ("Current top-side temperature is....")
- Quake 2
- Tie Fighter ("you will have one wing man")
- xwing/xwing vs tie fighter

ahhh memories, when PC games were awesome, and miles ahead of the console equivalent

Iirc TNT32mb here, think my first game was HL1 quickly followed by blue shift and quake 3.

and quickly after that i upgraded to a 64mb card for allied assault and having a TV out was a major trouser tenting moment!

First card (like so many others) was a 3DFX Righteous Orchid Voodoo paired with a Matrox Millennium. Bought it specifically for Carmageddon (2?). Later upgraded to GeForce 256 - and from there I have no idea - it became all numbers rather than names like it was "back in the day".
