Old Tape Backup

Once you know what tapes they are let me know, I got a few odd tape drives at home, DAT and DLT, I would suggest getting a trial version of backup exec as that can read tapes from quite a few sources, even if it a backup from a novell server you should be able to retores to a windows drive (I done that in the past)

Could be Arcserve too.

I've had a very quick look into this, if the Netware volume was compressed you cannot restore to a Windows volume.
Can't say I've done this myself, despite having done many Netware file restores, but a thread from 2003 on Experts Exchange says this is the case.

Any idea what interface the Drive has? I would say definitely SCSI, but there are a few flavours so you may need to hunt down a SCSI card for it.

Once you've got it connected just try it with as many backup software installs as you can, you may strike it lucky and find it has no password after all.

Of course you may find these are the tapes from a magnet factory and you've got 120m long streams of plastic.

Your Dad has got a hell of a job there, hope he is charging accordingly!

You should be able to also use a DDS4 or DAT72 drive.
I can't guarantee this as it seems like the backwards compatibility on DDS tapes is a bit vague.

Don't forget you may need a SCSI card for this as well, depending on what server you are installing it into.

Right, I have spent a total of £40.74 getting:

1 x Dell 4479R 2 Channel Ultra2 LVD SCSI PCI Card
1 x DELL 9561P LVD SCSI Cable with Terminator
1 x Dell PowerEdge 2500 STD2401LW SCSI DAT Drive 0H834

Hopefully all parts should arrive during the middle of next week and I will attempt to find out what is on these tapes :)

I got all the parts today, and I am currently making an image of one of the tapes to my hard disk.

It is taking ****ing ages.

It has been running for around 30 minutes now and has done 5% of 3818982400 bytes :(

Windows Backup sort of works, but for two tapes it has failed after a short while. It can catalogue the drives though and the partially recovered data is fully readable, which indicates the tapes are not encrypted :)

I downloaded Symantec Backup Exec (trial version), and I could find no option of reading from tape drives :(

Does BE see the tape drive in Devices?

If so, right click the tape drive (with the tape in) and run an Inventory job. Then you'd need to run a Catalog job (again right click the tape drive)

Ahh, the issue I had previous, was that I couldn't run the program properly on a stand alone PC.

During installation, I cannot select "Install Backup Exec software and options" as it is greyed out :(

/Edit: It worked in Windows XP though, so I am guessing it is an issue with Windows 7. Just installing now :)
