Old Tape Backup

A five year old DDS3 tape? Good luck!

Will have been written with TapeWare or Arcserve I woulda thought. Arcserve has a Windows client which is, er, slow and terrible but I can't immediately think why you wouldn't be able to restore to a new destination.

I now have Backup Exec working, and it gave me a read/write error and recommended that I clean the drive. The drive has two green lights on it (and the amber to indicate read/write), so I am guessing one of the green ones is a warning to clean the drive.

I have ordered a cleaning cartridge, which should arrive tomorrow :)

The cartridge didn't help, so I mentioned the issue to the eBay seller who I got the tape drive from. He sent a replacement one which arrived today... and it has just taken me 35 mins to copy 6.6gb of data of a tape, with no errors. WOO HOO! :)

To be honest, the tapes weren't what the company thought they were.

Company X bought company Y, which is where the fraud took place, and everyone thought the tapes were company Y's - they turned out to be company X's.

They contained My Documents folders, and other random folders from a stand alone PC. All in all, no use to the investigation at all, but I get paid for my time, so YAY :)
