Per expectations, LG expected to release OLED monitors in either '16 or '17.

Prototypes expected at CES.

I think some people who bought the exceedingly overpriced crop of monitors this year, particularly IPS GSynch, will have some very long faces when these launch if they intended to keep their purchases for a long time.

If we get these in '16, that's much bigger than Zen, Arctic Islands or Pascal IMO.

Also, unless they have big volumes, I hope LG keep the panels to their own brand ... LG monitors are vastly better value usually than LG panels in 3rd party monitors - just look at the ludicrous prices of some of the 34" 3440x1440 IPS LG-paneled monitors.

I highly doubt we'll be seeing anything in 2016. 2017 perhaps, but even then it will be obscenely expensive and make the likes of the X34 look cheap. There's several key hurdles to overcome with OLED when it comes to PC monitors also, and personally I would not want to be paying through the nose to be a first adopter.

LOL! Come back in 5 years when they hit 34" at a reasonable pricepoint and I'll upgrade ;) :D

In terms of production (process) of mid sized panels? Yes. In terms of the product itself? What? Responsiveness, refresh rates, contrast, viewing angles etc are awesome. No bleed. No glow. Colours on newer panels are fantastic, and even on non-wide gamut panels, the increased contrast gives the impression of far better richness.

I don't see why OLEDs either by LG in '16/17 or Samsung in '17 should "make the X34 look cheap" if they produce them in volume. You do realise that potentially OLEDs are much cheaper to produce and then assemble a product out of than LCDs? Flat, and definitely curved. As far as TVs and mobiles are concerned, prices are falling all the time and capacity and yields have made huge progress in the last 18 months. The screen in my Galaxy Tab S2 is absolutely awesome.

To be honest it's pretty much the other way around. All the 3440x1440 monitors from any brand are (vastly) better than the LG's :o

Well it's just analysts making the 2016-2017 predication. Realistically, I wouldn't expect anything until 2017 or 2018 - LG still doesn't have much capacity for OLED and all of it is going towards TV. Sure they could make an OLED monitor using their existing plants but this would take away from TV production which seems to be going really well - they're projecting to sell double the OLED TVs next year.

However, they are opening up another production plant but that isn't happening until 2018 according to this article: http://www.ibtimes.com/lg-display-spend-87-billion-new-oled-panel-plant-reports-say-2201949

I'd say we might get a smaller OLED TV next year that could be used as a monitor, would surely be just 60 Hz though.

About time although adding a gsync module to a thin display is scandalous, so I hope their motion processing (if any) doesn't cause lag, or trailing effects like on tvs.

You'll absolutely definitely see OLEDs of around that size at below X34 prices in '17. Without a doubt. If products launch next year, then likely next year.

I really hope you're right tbh! OLED with 4K/HDR/Gsync would be fairly epic imo!

In the meantime I'll be enjoying my X34 for 2 or 3 years ;)

"ALL"? Lol, there is one other, the VA panel from Samsung in the S34E790C. Every other 3440x1440 is using an LG panel.
Uh?

AOC, DELL, ACER (and Asus soon) all have their own 3440x1440 monitors using LG's IPS panels and are better than the LG's. AT 2560x1080 (21:9 FullHD) there are just more producers but the story is the same: LG is always the worst.

How much have they done to address the screen burn in issue? Won't this be massive problem for desktop use?

This is what would bother me the most, certainly if the screen on my Galaxy S2 was anything to go by. Would want there to be zero risk of this happening on a desktop screen.

Just to be clear though, you realise all these monitors, including the LG curved and flat ultrawides are using the SAME two LG panels, the LM340WU2-SSA1 in the curved versions, and the LM340UW1-SSA1 in the non-curved (basically the same). Even the latest X34 is using the same one, just overclocked to within an inch of its life.

This ^^

The 'tech' and guts are all the same. It's just different brands with different levels of chassis build quality, different levels of quality control, customer service and warranty.

Some are good/ better, some are arse.

Bit of a sweeping jib there man? whats ur beef?

if u care to read the XR34 thread there aint too many unhappy customers

and how can u call them overpriced in comparison to the figures being branded about concerning the OLED screens?

OLED can still have inherent panel faults and with the quality of some of the latest screens it doesn't put me in good faith that the first batch of them we see won't be that good. It will need to have gsync/freesync and 120hz+ to start with for me to even consider it, and for that I'm expecting more silly prices than we're already seeing, particularly due to OLED panels costing more to produce at the moment due to the kinks in manufacturing them.

Yes, and I'm saying they are better than the LG's. You realise that LG is also assembling their panels and selling their own monitors do you? Well they are worse than any other which is exactly the contrary of what the op said. Got it?

Quoting for the 3rd time

Note: "monitors" and "panels" are not synonyms.
