I wonder how much extra expense the unnecessary fripperies like voice control add.

ugh!! face recognition, motion control, multi tasking functionality?, surprised its not also got touchscreen

I just want a super thin, tv with great colours, black levels and response.

why cant companies resist adding silly extras (at great expense to the buyer id imagine) lets get the large OLED's out at affordable prices before adding fancy extras.

not really. its all software and TVs use a CPU these days. all the expense really is just for a webcam. not that they wont CHARGE more but its not expensive to put in.

i'd like a new TV as my trusty toshiba regza (top range model, not their cheapy ones) is showing its age now but i want no glasses 3d (i wear glasses already and dont like the darker, less saturated image you get with 3d glasses) and isnt OLED supposed to not last long? i hear 5 years life... which is poor.

i do want true black levels though... yummy

possibly but i tend to move TV around when i buy a new one. so it would go in bedroom when i replace it.... worth a thought though but i will wait until glasses free 3d come in

I read theat Samsung and LG haven't yet confirmed prices. That's not too surprising. The few examples seen at the shows will be engineering samples. It is still to be seen whether they can get consistent yield in production volumes.

When Fujitsu launched with a 42" plasma back on the late 90's the cost was £10,000 a panel. That's about £13.5K in today's money. Picture quality wasn't a patch on CRTs of the time, and the resolution was no better that the CRTs either.

Some pundits have guessed that the 55" OLED will launch at between $5000 and $8000 USD. That's around £3200 - £5100 sterling. If, and it's a big IF, the panel can produce the colour saturation and black level performance then that's probably about the right value for a new technology TV product. I'd expect to see prices dipping south of £2000~£3000 within a year as the Koreans chase Panasonic for the premium home theatre market. LED backlighting will become dominant in the mass market. Traditional LCD will be pushed downrange.

There's been speculation here about the cost of voice control and how much that adds to the price. I'd say "very little" is the answer given it's already on better smartphones right now and has been in-car for a few years too. So it's not going to add hundreds to the cost of a TV but does have a higher perceived value. Let's face it, if you just shelled out £3000-£5000 then you want a few toys to show off to your mates :D
