Oleds are overrated

I hate the phrase overrated, but unfortunately, it applies here.

So my alienware QD-oled came in the mail today. I paid 899 canadian. I was expecting something extravagent. I was expecting an image quality unmatched in all the thrones of titan. I'm not convinced it's a better image quality than my 280 HZ alienware IPS. Man, I'm not convinced it's nicer to look at than my old 2017'ish 300 dollar RCA cheapskate 4k 55 inch television.

It seems dim. I don't get it. I always thought everyone gushing over "seeing details in the inky blacks" was an odd thing to base a viewing experience on, and now that I'm seeing the detail in Jeff Daniel's black jacket, it strikes me as even more irrelevant. I'd rather have a bright, vibrant image than see a pocket on a black jacket. I'm just not following this at all.

If I paid full price for this panel, I'd feel ripped. If I paid 1900 for the LG variant, I'd probably commit sepuku.

Why don't you put it next to your RCA TV and record them playing the same HDR game, upload to YouTube and let's see if it's as bad you claim

This you @kute?..

I can see where you are coming from but movies and games have never looked better than on an oled screen.

Maybe you expected too much? Is the room you have it in a particularly bright one?

When viewing SDR it is very similar to a high quality IPS apart from no glowing corners and proper blacks
HDR is where it really shines, even more so in the dark. If you've not used an OLED before it can be a real awakening to what you've been missing

Not a huge OLED fan myself - though it has some disadvantages especially when it comes to black levels I much prefer QD-LED on a VA panel when done right - the lifelikeness of vibrant scenes is just another level.

That VA smear too, awful. I went from a Samsung VA to QD OLED as my main display and the difference is substantial.

OLED, downside and black levels. Are you sure? Maybe if you don't like actual black and prefer your blacks a shade of grey.
Only downside for me is you need a darker room to get the best from it, or you need to boost the brightness above reference levels.

Some people just don't like accuracy and actually want a bright vibrant picture, which is fine.

My comments about downsides were related to QD-LED not OLED.

The worst thing about OLED is is if your input is poor it's very obvious. The other side is with really high quality media it looks great.

Same with many of the newer QD/OLED/other LED technologies - standard definition Netflix looks absolutely trash on a lot of modern 40+" displays.

I probably shouldn't comment as I've not bought my OLED monitor yet (though I do love my OLED TV), but I have recently bought and returned an IPS screen as I just couldn't get past the IPS glow, it was so distracting in dark scenes and looked awful. I'm certainly looking forward to proper blacks when I finally make the move.
