Olympic Diving

Anyone know why they enter the water with palms out? Surely that would create more of a splash than if they had their palms together in an arrow shape?

It creates a vacuum between their hands and head when they go in the water straight, means that splash happens deeper in the water so less above the surface.

If you did that you'd break all your fingers if you had a bad dive, they hit the water at speeds of up to 40mph.

There won't be any gold medal for Daley, in fact, doubt there'll be any medal. He's only barely managing to get in the top 18 to qualify for tomorrow and there's simply too many other great divers doing perfect splashless entries. Feel sorry for him, but he's very over hyped by the british media as the poster boy for the olympics. And pete waterfield is doing terribly, second from last out of about 32 divers.

He will probably be over hyped (isn't everyone British really?)

But as far as I know, he's done very well in previous events recently.
Said he will be much better by 2016 as well and had a tough year :)

Pete's last dive was very bad though..

Didn't a lot of the hype come from how young he was and looked 4 years ago? Not taking anything away from him but the media does tend to latch on.

Would've been 14 in Beijing, wasn't expected to get a medal by any means; but he got some experience.

Only seems like in the last few months his name has really got around though, for those who don't follow diving/or him. Media would latch onto an 18 year old who looks like that though wouldn't they, especially with his dad dying etc.

MUCH better from Pete.
