I'd never sell a mechanical drive. I just run a large welding magnet over my old, unwanted drives then smash them with a hammer just to be safe.

I've never had an unwanted SSD but due to the way they work, I'd be even more cautious about selling one on. Maybe incinceration?

Well just bought a second hand hard drive , and its full of folders and files already whats the most worrying is i have sold hard drives to cex myself in the past . I now have nearly 10gb of data and its only checked 2% of the drive i have passport scans , bank statements ,credit card scans , tenancy agreements like all the most personal of stuff . What do you reckon i should do , i want compensating for the potential loss i may have suffered from my drives , and this poor family there stuff is going nowhere, do i tell the police they should compensate me i know thats a cheap deal but i have sold god knows how many drives formatted to them thinking they would format them stupid i know but when you strip your computer you think that a quick format is enough

or do i tell the previous owner let them sue the arse of cex , sorry for the bad punctuality i am so shocked at what i have found

I'd buy it off you.

Hi guys. I left a notepad containing all my bank details, my national security number, scans of my passport and medical history in the street.

Who's going to give me money for my own stupidity?

if you head in the storage section you can currently see a thread of someone buying a new drive from ocuk that came with data on :D

it meant to be going in B grade stock but got mixed up with new HDDs, OcUK have gone through all the WD reds now to make sure it doesn't happen again :D

i have a headache after reading this post.......

firstly, "god knows how many" - why do you go through that many drives?
secondly, if you hand over a computer to a place like that, or ANYWHERE frankly, without bothering your ar$e to wipe your data yourself, you're either dumb, lazy or both and anything that happens to that data is your own fault.
sadly typical that the frst reaction is you trying to leech some compo money though.

I've had B grade drives from proper retailers arrive full of the old owners pirate material, I wouldn't trust CEX to wipe their own backside never mind a drive and especially not securely as that takes hours per drive.

Why do you want compo?

Secondly, if you sell a house with all your passports and credit cards still lying around, that aint the estate agents fault - its the previous owners fault.

Just wipe the damn thing and quit being excited.

So you've bought a second hand drive, decided to run drive recovery software on it and you are now complaining that you have been able to recover files from it?!

That's like walking past and noticing a pile of dog poo, deciding to roll around in it, stand up and start angrily screaming that you are now covered in poo!

* And then demanding money from the dog!
