So you've bought a second hand drive, decided to run drive recovery software on it and you are now complaining that you have been able to recover files from it?!

That's like walking past and noticing a pile of dog poo, deciding to roll around in it, stand up and start angrily screaming that you are now covered in poo!

Well just bought a second hand hard drive , and its full of folders and files already whats the most worrying is i have sold hard drives to cex myself in the past . I now have nearly 10gb of data and its only checked 2% of the drive i have passport scans , bank statements ,credit card scans , tenancy agreements like all the most personal of stuff . What do you reckon i should do , i want compensating for the potential loss i may have suffered from my drives , and this poor family there stuff is going nowhere, do i tell the police they should compensate me i know thats a cheap deal but i have sold god knows how many drives formatted to them thinking they would format them stupid i know but when you strip your computer you think that a quick format is enough

or do i tell the previous owner let them sue the arse of cex , sorry for the bad punctuality i am so shocked at what i have found

Hello sirrrrrrr this is CEX calling, we has your monies and your donkey prons hardrive, would you please give us some more monies to make it go away....

lol you lot are funny , its been wiped so stop having a meltdown. I seriously think some of you have watched too much mr robot at least it gave you all a chance to up your post count because that's what you guys are about aren't you ? thanks for the insults always a pleasure. Remember don't hate the player hate the game !!

Yikes...

Anyway, you original assumption is incorrect. Just because you were given a hard drive that contains data (wiped incorrectly or not) does not mean that hard drives you've sold haven't been wiped incorrectly.

As others have said it does highlight the importance of keeping your own data secure AND it reminds me that I've got about 15xHDD that I need to drill that I've refused to just bin...

So rather than formatting it and continuing with life you decided to start running data retrieval through it to potentially find the previous owners nudes?

They probably have some small print legally protecting them from any comeback.

As others have said, it's not their responsibility.

However, it's feasible anyone could sell a HD to them full of viruses and nasty malware and infect the systems of anyone who plugs it in so it's a bit of a security risk for sure.

First thread I actually read every post, golden :-)

Op has downloaded some naughty stuff in the past "god knows how many times" and is now sweating like Jimmy Savile in a courts waiting room.

I would never buy uses storage devices, unless I personally knew the person selling them.

To be fair it sounds like previous owner/CeX actually did at least quick format the drive but the OP is a bit weird and is running data recovery software on it to create an issue.

Someone actually bought something from CeX? :o

This is more shocking, they charge near retail prices for used items so I don't understand why anyone would buy hardware from them.

Seriously? OP needs to get a life.
