Omg Rover 75!

You can say the same about the MG ZS too. But you wont thanks to your rose tinted glasses and will simply cast them off as facelifted 1992 Honda Civics

Which in 1992, were pretty damn good. Compared to other stuff around at the time I believe i've admitted they were good..

Well, to be perfectly honest - it took 10 years to get that Civic chassis to handle really, really well. By that time the car around it was so old people just thought it was wiser putting their £16k elsewhere.

4 years you mean? In the guise of the Integra Type R.

But thats the point here, MG's do offer the VFM.

Nothings better than a BMW on this forum so don't waste your time ;)

The only thing wrong is there association as being driven by #Barclays bankers# and having high running costs be it:

Depreciation
Fuel Costs
Insurance
Servicing
Parts

The majority are Fugly too. For style (and lets face you should drive a car because its an emotive experience) buy, either Alpha, Lotus, TVR, something different. BMW's are too common/bland these days.

Why is there a fanatical fascination and flame throwing following on this forum?

Yeah, because Alfa, Lotus and TVR are all known for their strong residuals, frugal economy, reasonable insurance, cheap servicing, and rare need for replacement parts.

The problem is we have a forum here where people drive different cars. People will always get personal about their own car so when you have one forum discussing different makes and models its a bit of a pressure cooker and flames will inevitably fly.

Badge snobbery, pubtalk, willy waving, Rover etc - the possibilities for flame wars are endless

Your off your rocker, and I drive a Lotus.

Generally the reason the roads are full of BMWs is because *ding* *dong* they are good well built cars. Ok lots of snobbish people want them for the badge but it all stems from the above reason.

I have not posted in the motors section much (I wonder why?)
but after every single post I read in this section a similar pattern emerges.

Just come straight out with it and stop beating round the bush:

I`ve got a BMW so I am right about everything and I own the road and I (like to make it look like ) earn loads of money. I am also fairly ignorant and harsh with people who are "non believers".

Oh Dear, I think war is about to be declared.

I always believe that buying a BMW comes from the head.

Buying an Alfa, Lotus or TVR comes from the heart.

Up to you really what matters more.

I never stated that wasnt the case

My point is there are alternatives and probably prettier and more satisfying alternatives. The world does not revolve around BMW as it seems to come across here, unfortunately. :)

What a load of rubbish. I've posted in the same style for 4 years during which time I've owned both a £1k Xantia diesel with 160k on it and an ex-fleet Ford Mondeo. If you get the impression I think I'm 'above' anyone you are very much mistaken. My opinions and posting style are completely incidental to the car I drive.

Yes, because my decision to buy a 3 litre RWD 4.7m metre long saloon car to take myself to and from Uni at my age was entirely influenced by my head, using logic and common sense.

Not :p It was most definatley a heart over head option. Head said buy another Mondeo.

And there was me thinking you spent 9 months+ looking for a car that fitted your criteria being more of a head decision.

Popularity trends very, very rarely follows cars road abilities or driving characteristics. British roads are exclusively full of Corsas and Escorts and they are just about anything except good rides and well built cars.
To be absolutely honest I would say vast majority of BMW drivers go for badge and yobbish looks, with just a small percentage of owners choosing them for the great rides they truelly are. I would risk opinion that this is almost solely the reason why good spec, proper engined, well kept, purely "drivers car" beemers are actually hard to find (as many forumites had a chance to experience recently), but you'll see debadged ***** bottom of the range vehicles with clocked tachos and leds removed from service reminder indicators all over autotrader.

Thought i'd throw this in...

My Dad's 2.0l Turbo Diesel Rover 75 has done 112,000 miles and hasn't needed any work doing on it other than a cambelt which gave up before it's time and regular servicing.

Then i'd be upset, as they dont have a cambelt.

Equipment, sure. Looks, subjective, handling, err no. Safety, err, what systems are fitted to the ZT? AFAIK it has no traction control, let alone stability control. Ok, this is a good thing in a performance car but it doesn't mean it has 'better safety' than a car with DSC etc.

So the only thing the 5 offers over a 260 ZT is DSC, as all 260s and 190s had TC as standard and it was optional, at small cost, on all other models.

You denied it was an improved version of the FWD platform..

No, I said it was re-designed and revised. The revision was in the understanding that, thanks to BMWs original over engineering, the always once planned RWD was now going to be even easier, and even better than anything BMW had to offer. BMW admitted this on several occasions, thats why you're taking so long to offer one bit of proof that the E39 chassis is the best saloon platform ever.

Rubbish. It's a quick, good looking Rover 75. Don't get carried away.,

No, it has a Rover 75 body and interior. Here, the comparison between the R75 ends
