On-Board network controller not found?

Ok, heres the scoop.

I've recently built a computer for a friend and he wants to connect it to his router to get online. I have the appropriate cables and I am 110% sure that it has all been connected up correctly to the router. The modem and router are perfectly fine, so are the cables. One light on the LAN port is turned on too.

In BIOS the network controller is set in 'auto' (out of the two possible 'auto' and 'disenabled') When I click on network settings in Windows XP (home edition), and attempt to create a new network connection, the computer complains that thee is no hardware installed to connect to a network. I go through Hardware management and it doesn't have a network connection in it.

What is going on, this is my second build and I'm dissapointed that it isn't working properly :( .

The specs of the computer are as follows:

AMD 3500+ AM2
MSI K9N Neo-F nForce 550 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
3DFuzion 7600GT
Crosair Value DDR2 1Gb Dual Channel
XP Home edition
Enermax Liberty 400W

Please help, Im at a complete loss here!?!?!

1) does the device appear in device manager and appear to be installed correctly.

2) what do you mean create new network connection? If the adapter is installed then it will just be there already

Ok, it isnt actually appearing in the hardware manager, so it cant connect to the network.

Basically i believe the computer doesnt think the hardware is installed. Am i right in believing this?

I'm gonna reinstall windows just to see if that does anything

Driver issues.....its simply not installed. Why do you think that re-installing windows is going to be of any benefit? Windows clearly doesnt have the driver files for the device.

Sorry Jex I dont mean to interupt your excellent advice but in the initial post Rokusho says that the LAN light on the router is lit - if this is the case then the only way this could be lit is if the LAN connector on the mobo is also working fully?

Correct the light on the LAN port on the Mobo is turned on, indicating its connected, not sure about the one on the router, TBH, not noticed it and too late for me to check today.

If it is a driver issue, where which CD would the drivers be located on?

Not necessarily. Seen cards that'll happily light up and do nothing else.

The drivers should be on either the manufacturer's website, or on the CD that came with the mobo.

appologies thought it was the LAN light on the router which was lit - which would have been unusual , but having lights on a driver-less mobo is much more suaul I will grant you

K, i'll try to reinstall the motherboard driver CD today then.

***Update***

Huzaa, Iy worked, cheers for your hwlp guys, just a little confused whaere the drivers went before, even though I installed the motherboard drivers after Windows was installed. Why I had to do it again I have no idea.
