Until your 21, you are stuck with a 125cc with (if i remember rightly) 33BHP.

If he passes a motorcycle test, then he can ride a bike of any capacity as long as it is restricted to 33bhp. He could ride an R1 if he wanted as long as it was restricted!

After passing the test, you are restricted to 33bhp for a period of 2 years after which you can ride any bike.
What type of bikes do you like? Racers, streetfighters, commuters, traillies, motards etc?

Ah right, so is it 125cc limit before passing the test then? (sure i remember 125cc being a key stone somewhere).

Surely 125CC is not 33BHP?

But yes is it not until you have done 2 years of riding you are restricted to 33BHP. Whilst a learner and until you have passed the first bike test you can have up to 125CC. Once you have passed the bike test you can have up to 33bhp - which can be around 400cc no?

That's it. If you're over 17 with a CBT you can ride a 125 on L plates as long as it doesn't exceed 11.5bhp (or something around that, used to be 15bhp).

Another point to consider, if you pass your test and are restricted for 2 years, if you reach 21 before the two years is up, you can take a test to upgrade to the full unrestricted licence.

well i like erm ducatties and nijas basicly because av ridden both with my uncle in the past so i would probs say racers and streetfighters

Look at the Ducati Monster 600's. They're not a bad first bike as they are fairly cheap, easy enough to ride, not too powerful and they have a nice v-twin engine with a faptastic sound. They may cost a few quid more to run than something like an SV650 but it won't be by much and they're cheaper to buy in the first place.

I almost bought one a couple of years ago after a spin on a mates, lovely bike :)

i have been looking at this at mo think you will have to google it though but looks hottttt:)

SACHS XTC 125 4-stroke

They look all right but my granny could run to 60mph faster. You'll get bored with the weedy engine and will want to change it fairly quick. You'd be best doing it right and getting at least a 400cc bike, something like a Suzuki Bandit 400 or the Ducati Monster. If you want a faired bike you can pick up a Honda CBR400 or a VFR400 for reasonable money and both are great bikes.

Honestly, if you want a 125, get a 2 stroke bike. The 2 stroke engines have much more potential for releasing a few more ponies. The 4 stroke 125's are pathetic.

Jesus lol.

Right first thing you need to do is your CBT this will allow you to ride up to a 125cc. Because you are under 21 if you go for your test you can ride any bike you want as long as you get it restricted to 33bhp (that's if it produces over 33). When you are 21 (and 2yrs has passed) you can ride any bike any bhp, assuming you go for your test.

He can't take Direct Access until he's 21. He will have to do the A2 which will allow him to ride up to 33bhp.

Thats the one i meant (why do they have so many!!!)..

He needs to say which one he's going to take though before a bike can be recommended thats all :)

He has no choice on the Direct Access course.

He will first do CBT. This as said will allow him to ride a 125cc max with 11.5hp max

Then He can do his normal test which will be on a 125cc motorcycle. Once this test has been passed he can ride any CC bike but it must be restricted to 33hp. SV650 is a good bike for getting restricted as it has excellent low down grunt which is what you will want being as it will be restricted.

At the age of 21 u can either do your direct access test on a 500cc motorbike or just wait until your two year period runs out and then you can ride anything anyway :D

edit: noob beat me to it!!

Sounds a lot simpler. Mind you I've found a lot people get confused with the way bike licences work.

Just to let you know most people get their bike restricted and then take the washer out and it's back to full power the cops haven't got a clue when it comes to bikes (except for bike cops). The amount of times I've been stopped with my race can on and they have said "sir, is that the original manufacturer exhaust" I say yeah sure, it has Micron written on the side. :D :p
